PAS pipe loose

  1. #1
Following my previous thread, I have invistaged to find that not only was my PAS very low, I had a leak coming from the join that connects the PAS pump to the steering rack:

I haven't touched it yet but how on earth does it leak?

Does it have a O-Ring inside the pipe and this has burst in the cold? Or is it ironic that the thread has worked its self loose?

I would like to remove the pipe, clean the threads and neatly put PTFE tape around the threads but I'm not sure if the PAS fluid would eat away the tape?

Any ideas how this happened? and is it a easy repair or a new steering rack as a precaution?

Did you bend the pipe up when you lowered the car? It will be the steering arm that has caused.

Hands up if im wrong but thats my take on it.

How do you know what lowering is?

It was lowered before I bought it and i have had it 18 months now with no problems. Stripped threads or damaged joint?

is it leaking at the union nut? cant you just try and tighten it up a bit?

It is leaking there indeed. I would like to tighten it (and I will) but why has a threaded bar came undone?

I dont know what the answer is.

    Carry on with your leak.

What threaded bar? for your brakes? That's not meant to be tight unless you put load on it (i.e pressing the pedal)

As for your union, it has no rubber seal on it. it's like a large brake line. that's the high pressure side.

it's 17mm AF, you can use a crow foot spanner or a really short spanner.

Lowering your car, that arm will not hit that pipe. Prickle, sometimes I wonder if you really did lower your car, or just weigh it down for the photo

Haha, my steering arm did touch it dude when the wheel went up our drive ramp (fair size). I just stuck a spanner inbetween the pipe and arm and pressed down to lift it. its a stubborn pipe. Now Clears it.

It clearly shows you in the FAQs
