Knocking from front left

Going to check the wheel bearings tomorrow but done some searching on here and it seems to be either the driveshaft or the wishbone.

How will I know which it is? And can I replace the driveshaft without changing the cv joint or vice versa as surely they rely on each other? Cheers

Can you feel the knock In the footwell?? if so be driveshaft. Id say more than likely drive shaft over anything else

What if you can't feel the knock in the footwell, what will it be?
I'm going to look over everything on mine tomorrow as it's just developed a kind of knocking/rubbing noise when i turn either way :/

I started with the driveshafts. Changed both. Still did it. Changed both new wishbones. Still did it. Fitted new top mount bearings. Noise went.

Get your head under the wheel and get someone to turn it and listen for a clunk.

It's less of a clunk. It's more of a sort of grinding/whirring when the wheel is left quite a way. A squeak when a little bit or turned right. And a constant whirring/rumbling when on the dual carriageway. Can't really say it's a knock but my dad says when I leave his, he can hear a knock (him being outside the car) and he was saying this before this properly started.

Take everything off and make sure it's all tight I had a knocking noise and it turned out jus to be a loose damper collar mate

That's the problem, I know what I'm doing with bikes but cars are a bit of a mystery at the moment. I'll try and have a look to see if anything is wobbling. But like some posts I read, you can't tell when its static as it doesnt come up on the mot.

Found my problem, rubber gaitor on driveshaft has split and lost all its grease

OP jack car up so both front wheels off the floor, lay under the car and while spinning your wheel check for split cv boot gaitors (both sides), check if there's any play in the driveshafts, check all other rubber bushes like on ends of drop links/ball joints.
while wheels are off the floor grab each wheel from side (9-3 like on a clock) and see if it wobbles and same from top and bottom.

Put it in the air. No movement at 12-6 but some movement at 3-9. Took the wheel off and there was no cracks in the driveshaft boot. The disc and outer hub bit (sorry for the bad explanation, not used to cars) moved about 1-2mm. I did video it, I'll post the link in a sec.

I tried to tighten it up but its so god damn tight. I tried to loosen it a bit as well. It was dark but is there something holding it in?

And also the disc rubs at some point. So warped disc, seized pistons or shit pads?

Its quite hard to define. Occasionally but it doesnt increase pitch with speed.

Are these bearings coned, as in can I tighten them to take up the play or have I got to get new bearings, and I read something about them having to be pressed?

Haven't tested it out properly yet but seem to have fixed it. Basically the bolts that were holding the disc in were loose on the left side and had sheared off on the right, can't believe it held together! Also the boot had slipped on the right so pulled it back, gave everything a wipe and packed it with grease. Seems to be a lot better, quieter and nicer to drive again. Going to have a look at the rears tomorrow.

The driveshaft on the right has a small amount of movement, maybe 1-2mm. Is that okay or should I look at getting it replaced?

Your wheel bolts against the disk anyway dude so it will not have play.

Yeah I thought that but seems to have got rid of 90% of the noise. The greasing has probably helped as well though.

Any idea about the play in the driveshaft?
