vt kit smoothing

  1. #1
i am going to smooth my vt bump strips into the vt kit, not the kit to the car jsut blend the bump strips out on the vt kit like so:

anyway just want soem recomendations as i dont want it cracking once i've done it, do i just use normal car filler? shal i rough the plastic or put little holes where the filler is gona go so it will bond through and stick good?
  2. #2
to fill them use fibre glass first, there is a bonding agent for the fibre glass to bond to plastic, but can't remember the name, but you can just rough it up with 40 grade sand paper, do all the filling and shaping with the fibre glass, then finnish with filler, then final layer of stopper, smooth, prime, smooth, paint, laqcuere

cheers chris its only about a 2mm gap that needs to be filled so do you think just filler would be ok? i got a spare set of door mouldings to try it on as i got them off egay for £5.50

don't use filler, the little gap might be 2mm, thats deap for filler as it sinks a fair bit, but it's the amount you have to put on to get it looking right:
I did mine used fibre glass and then filled, and I used a fair bit of fibre to get rid of the full lip:thumbup:

couple of shots of mine, just give is a shout if you need any advice

  6. #6
Fair play that looks nice mate, Who sprayed it? Would you do it for a price on another car?
  7. #7
    all work done by me:

I would and do, for a price
  8. #8
looks mint mate, can u find out the name of that stuff for me mate so that the fibreglass sticks to the plastic, cheers
  9. #9
    will do mate
  10. #10
is it some epoxy stuff or something?

    i found this text:

"First stipple the resin onto the fibreglass on a board or similar then paint a small amount onto the kayak itself. This will make sure all will bond well. Place the fibreglass onto the kayak and again use the brush to stipple the area. This is to remove all air and let the resin fully bond with the glass"

was on a site nothig nto do with cars and had hardly any info
  11. #11
it is like an epoxy, I'll be having a hunt about tonight, as I need plenty, just gettin a lovely job to do, shed loads of smoothing, boot lock, door handles and locks, smoothing all lines out of car, relocating number plate, and the list goes on
  12. #12
Fiberglass does not make a bond to plastic even if you drill holes in it. Your are better of using epoxy resin instead of polyester resin. Epoxy will will make a chemical bond to the plastic. Another product that might help you is called Automix from 3M or Duramix...same stuff. It is made for plastic repairs and works very well.
  13. #13
so could i use somethign like:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FLEX-EPOXY-EXT...QQcmdZViewItem

how would i do it, either

    a) appy expoy wait to set and then put fibreglass on top

    or

    b) appy apoys and while still wet put the fibreglass on top

    thanks for your help chris
  14. #14
I would let the epoxy go off, then the fibre glass will bond to that, just paint the epoxy on
  15. #15
have a look at this site
    EPOXY
  16. #16
what about tigerseal? paint it on then put fibreglass on top?
  17. #17
not sure mate, if you got any lying about, you could try it on a test pannel
  18. #18
i was on a site that sais do not bond fibreglass to plastic whatso ever instead use Plastic weld in place of the fibreglass and then al light skim of filler over the top of that
  19. #19
right tomorrow what i am going to do is get some fibergall filler, then i got a plastic tray in my garage then i will try put some scotch weld i ahve on it and then fibregall on top and test how well it holds
  20. #20
the more you look the more mind bogling it gets read one thing and find another, and they contradict each other
  21. #21
ok i got a test peice going at the moment, i have put some expoy on it and while still tacky put fibreglass on top trying to bond the two, also there is another peice of epoy that i will put fibreglass on top once its dried adn see which works the best either applying the fibreglass when expoy dry or wet.

the fibreglass i applied to the wet epoxy is looking good at the epoxy has realy blended into the fiberglass, its hard to see in the pics but i think this route is best
  22. #22
good work mate, keep is updated:thumbup:

    cheers mate

it's not that hard, takes a while like in the prep work, I only sussed out how to do it when I binned my bike, and decided to give it a go, that was a couple of years back, now I'm bizzy smoothing my mates KA:
  25. #25
If you ever get bord you cam attack my car with some fibreglass and if you could do the tailgate that would be mint
  26. #26
I've got a possi blue mk1 boot out back I'm waiting to smooth, well waiting for mate to weld the plate in it for me
  27. #27
what i am hoping to do is get a kit all smoothed, sprayed and ready to put on my car then spend one weekend putting it on so that way my motor wont be off the road long, i have a few vt pannels so far just keeping my eye open for a few more bits then i'll have a complete kit, managed to get both door pannels for £5.50 off ebay which was a result and only lived a 10min drive from me
  28. #28
what you still need steve ?
  29. #29
well i have a friend who has two front arches whos gona bring them down when hes back for uni so jsut need a couple of rear arches, i will keep my eye out on ebay as i'm not in a rush and if ya wait eventually a bargin can be picked up plus i got to smooth off the door cards yet so that will keep me busy
  30. #30
just took a couple of pics to show how much of the door panels need fiberglassing to give it a nice smooth look

holding a flat bendable peice of plastic against it
  31. #31
The door moulding were a bargain I've just paid £35 delivered for some they were colour coded though so it worked out cheaper than a respray.

It should look really good when its done.

YM03 - Do you have anymore Posi smooth tailgates lying around becuase I'm more than happy to bolt one onto my car.

I'm thinking off you and the space I could be saving you by having it fitted to my car

  34. #34
I've deffo got one I'll have a look see if I can find other
  35. #35
update, tested the fibreglass as took 24hours to completely cure, gives such a strong hold when you expoy the plastic then fibreglass on top while the epoxy is still wet, i was pulling on it as hard as i could and didnt even budge so i tryed a flat head screw driver adn even that couldnt get it off to easy so this is the route i will be using
  36. #36
should try and do a sticky, for future ref, as no doubt there will be more people asking about fibre glassing

take some pics whilst work in progres, stuff used, and the likes,

probs best to start a new thread, and pm a mod
  37. #37
yeah i got loads of pics on each stage of the process, i have just filled the vt sticker holes on the bumpstrip with the fibreglass and epoxy and now just have to wait 24hours for it to cure and then i'll do a light skim of filler over that, here are a few pics t okeep you entertained

    1) badge hole, sanded down inside and also made some slits in to give the expoy something to bond into

    2) epoxy applied with small paintbrush

    3) fibreglass applied on top of the expoy while the epoxy is still wet

  38. #38
a little bit more progress to report on, applied some filler on top of the fibreglass and sanded back to the contors of the bumpstrip

i need to apply some more filler as the filler i appied before must have had a few little air bubbles in and resulted in a few little imperfections so i will put a light skim of filler over this filler to fill in the few little holes. then i will run down through a load of different sandpaper grades till i get a nice smooth finish
  39. #39
good work steve:thumbup: keep it up:
  40. #40
nothing else to report on as of yet as i have had a busy week at work but i hope to continue the smoothign at the weekend
  41. #41
another little update, primered over the filler there is a slight imperfection i need to sort on the right side but nothing majour

now i'm waiting on more epoxy before i can do the bump strips as the epoxy i used is hard to source

right basicly to smooth stuff out you need to uses fibre glass as if you use just filler it will crack, so we use fibreglass to fill the main part and then apply a light skim of filler on top of the fibre glass. fibreglass will stick to metal fine but it wont bond to plastic so what you need to do is epoxy the plastic then while still wet appy the fibreglass on top this ensures a good bond between the plastic arch/panel and the fibreglass, if you simply bond fibre glass t plastic it will fall off
  45. #45
coming along nicely, see what you meen about the imperfection, I kept getting this problem, found I had to bring the filler just past the lip, and fine sand it, job done
  46. #46
Does that apply to the rubbing strips aswell steve?

got the epoxy through today, very hard to get hold of in the uk which is strange as its made by 3M and retails at $27 each but i managed to get hold of some through the place i got it before and they are able to offer it at £3 a packet  if you want some his is putting some on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3M-2216-B-A-Sc...QQcmdZViewItem its made by 3M and is called scotch weld 2216 and it is so good that i have ordered a load so i can stock up for other projects. anyway should hopefully see some more progress over the next few days smoothing out the bump strips

all the epoxy does is bonds the fibreglass to the plastic as fibreglass dont stick to plastics, the fibreglass will then when styled correctly smooth out the rear bumper strips and you would then use a small layer of filler on top of the fibreglass to make it nice and smooth, dont use just epoxy to fill the gap.
  63. #63
    Cheers mate
  64. #64
    looking good so far mate :Y;
cant wait to see the end results
