Important! : ASWill a VTS Gearbox on a VTR engine work well?

  1. #1
I need to know urgently. Someone has told me a VTS box on my VTR engine will increase acceleration. I've bought a vts box as my engine is out and am swapping gearbox's today. Just had a look at ratios on here and vts looks longer that a vtr, so I don't wanna be putting this box on my vtr and the car not moving or knacking the clutch. Also the only threads I can find are people putting 1.1 gearbox's on anything. Can someone please help!!

    Cheers Mike

Btw title failed, I accidently pressed enter and don't know how to change it.

VTS box is not "longer" than a VTR box, its final drive is higher than an R box for start. Its the diesel and furio boxes you've got to watch for as they are roughly the same as an R box. I swapped out an S1 rallye box for a VTS box as that was too far in the other direction (something like 105mph in 5th on the redline). VTS box offers a good compromise,

I had a vts box on my R and didnt notice a major difference tbh

The ratios are slightly shorter, acceleration will be increased slightly, though VTR engines arent peaky, the VTS engine works really well on the redline, the VTR engine is best more around 5,000rpm imo, im not sure if the VTS box will help it stay on the power or not.

    Should've got a 1.1 box

I didn't get a 1.1 as the lad said the diff was stronger in the VTS but the ratios are a about the same

If you want a box with a weak diff and incorrect shaft fitments

I will say a "short" box is a bad idea in a standard vtr with the 6250rpm rev limit

Gandi hit the nail on the head in both posts, i changed my gearbox in my vtr for a vts box and it was spot-on, it did have a rallye box in, the 'pull'/ acceleration was great but i dreaded motorway journeys.

I couldnt be arsed going with aything shorter than a vts with a sports cluster just for the motorway it would do my head in driving it every day. Ive had a vtr,vts & 1.1 box's on my engine the vts is definatly the best, the vtr box was good for the motorway but the acceleration difference was quite noticeable. The 1.1 was pretty much identical to the vts box but with the shitter diff and shaft problems i dont see the point in using them.

S1 rallye wasn't a good combo to be honest, though second gear felt punchy and gave a good response to the engine I have fitted. Can see why people fit them to cars with a higher rev limit and so on as you can make use of the ratios to fuller effect, but then on the other hand I cant see how people with big power 16vs dont constantly spin the wheels in the lower gears. Providing they've not fitted an LSD though many take this route.

That is whats going for the VTR box, its decent on the motor way. Driving across to Annecy in the VTR i just had it at 65mph and did 510 miles on a tank!!

The motorway is good i was getting an extra 50-60 miles from a tank with vtr box sitting at 70mph than with the S box

    It all adds up!

So tell me if I've got this right.

Vts box on a Vtr is a bad idea, cause it wastes loads of fuel on motorway journeys.
But on the positive side will give me better acceleration.

Thats about the sum of it, depends how many motorway miles you do I guess.

im getting my clutch done soon and as the box is off i might aswell change it!
is it worth looking harder/paying more for a vts/gti gearbox? or is a 1.1 gearbox going to be fine despite the weaker diff ?

I think its worth it yes, after all, why would you want to mix in more potential problems after doing a gearbox swap?

    Good answer.

    16v box it is then
