Caught short need some input - rpm problems

  1. #1
So I pulled out of a service station today after covering around 200 miles at steady speed and the car suddenly decided to introduce a new rev limit at 6k, its usually 7600. Im abit stuck as I have no proper tools or any access to any.

I do have a running j4 local to me that I can pinch sensors from but I dont want to take the piss. Ive had the plugs out etc and gone over everthing mechanical and cant find any problems. It only happens under load, the correct limit of 7600 can be reached when out of gear. My initial thought is the map sensor, or possibly O2 sensor but like I said I cant test any I dnt have a multimeter.

    Tps or map mate IMO

Have you tried resetting the ecu by unplugging the battery?
  4. #4
Cheers blackie im sure I can try both of them.

Yea stevo disconnected bsttery did all the usual stuff

Ecu failing and maybe going into limp mode?

Doing my nappa in this one so pissd off thats its my own car too, heres what i did today:

Noticed an air lock so bled the system, it took over a litre :s
    changed:
    Plugs
    Coilpack
    Ecu
    TPS
    MAP sensor
    Crank Sensor

    Argh! i need a multimeter

Right an update on this im pulling my fucking hair out. So below is a list of whats been changed and checked:

Noticed an air lock so bled the system, it took over a litre :s
    Plugs
    Coilpack
    Ecu
    TPS
    MAP sensor
    Crank Sensor
    Lambda sensor
    Both water sensors
    All earth points checked
    Fuel Pump
Ran it with the exhaust and air filter off (this hurt)

anyone had this before at all? pulls exactly the same before 5.5k then just dies off until 6k and acts asif ive hit the rev limit. I cant pull any live data from it or scan the ECU.

Fuel pump not supplying enough fuel when under load?
  9. #9
    Oops, already changed

    What about fpr?
  10. #10
its proper bizzare ive never had this problem in any car before. Ive just got another FPR there im going to throw it in now. It started doing something else strange yesterday it got low on petrol and kept cutting out if i gave it too much throttle as i was going up a hill.

I mean the fuel light had JUST came on its not caused any issues in the past 6 years at that level of fuel i do 30 odd miles on the fuel light. I got a video of it. It dosent do it with more fuel in it now but its still not going over 6K. Might be worth saying its not always dead on 6K its around that area, sometimes 5.5K sometimes 6.5K

And you've replaced the pump or just tested it? Could be the fpr tbh, they do sometimes collapse, if its blocking the line and not supplying enough fuel under load it could cause it

If not it sounds like you need to borrow an ecu to try
  12. #12
It's not the fpr ive tried Every thing in that list matey inc the ecu, Its got another fuel pump in it now, I don't get my why it's fine if it's not under load ie in neutral but I've replaced everything that works in relation to load sensing.

Check your injector o rings and manifold gasket/cracked inlet
  14. #14
Ah, good point I'll whip the inlet off tomorrow and check them
