just keep your eye out for one, ebay or go on the rallye register. Be prepared to spend a lot of money though. What car is it being fitted to?
  3. #3
Fitting it to a vts might try get a 1.4 xsi box

Yes! my vtr destroyed one in 6 month's and i dont drive like a bellend(much) either. So a vts would definatly kill it

I've got an S1 box on my VTS, best mod I've ever done. Keep checking the bay and rallye reg as said

As above also learn your gearbox codes, a couple of customers have been sold 1.1 boxes on eBay that were suppose to be s1 rallye boxes.

    Nope.

17 year olds who have no clutch control or mechanical sympathy will tell you they are weak.. but it's just their driving

Plenty of members including myself have used 1.1 boxes for alot of miles with no problems.

Did 26k miles on the 1.1 box with my 8v - not much sympathy either.. no noises / selects gears perfect

Then switched to 16v - and did a abusive 11k miles with engine oil in the box.

Finally changed it the other week as is started to whine (engine oil) and plan to do trackdays so wanted a better 1. (another 1.1)

SO 37k miles of mainly fun/aggressive driving and I'd refit the old box and drive to Scotland without tools tomorrow.

So don't let a few who have pulled the short straw and bought a bad box from day 1 put you off.

Also there is a issue with the shafts that has recently popped up on the forums too..

The sports shafts don't go into the box all the way. So not all the spine is used, and supposedly this could cause the shaft to come out of the box and strip the teeth when suspension is fully extended.

But having done 37k miles on a 1.1 box with sports shafts including high speed jumps - it's pretty safe to say the car has been in every possible scenario. With no problems.

Oh yeah the box cost me £20

I second that, I was had once with a "xsi" box that came out of a breaker of an xsi but was a diesel box

Yes, they are slightly thinner on the diff. but it's not any "weaker" unless you launch the car everywhere and are rough with the clutch and gear changes.

1.1 and VTS ratios are quite different.

If you want a 1.3 gearbox, look abroad. they're common as muck. not rare at all. They were all mass produced. thousands of 1.3XSi's out there.

so they did a 1.3 alloy block with J cam xsi?

the European LHD version of the XSi is the same as a uk spec XSi with a uk spec "Rallye" engine in it and gearbox. There were 1.3, 1.4 and 1.6 XSi's built.

so it should be exactly the same spec.

I don't know the gearbox codes though.

We need someone who lives in France to come here and halp
