T1R or Rainsport 2

  1. #1
BIG is among the many who've asked this but i want to makes a poll to help people with quick answers as well as details for those who're willing to read and absorb some of th knowledge that i hope this thread will provide

now, T1R or RS2?both a directional patterned tyres which look similar. some places charge more for one or th other but overall, similar in price

what i've personally gathered is that T1Rs wear faster then RS2 and RS2 are better when there's standing water.

from what i can see, at any given cross section(inside to outside wall), RS2 has more thread in contact with ground. layman's terms, should grip better and last longer as there's more rubber. please correct me if im wrong

    what do we think?

T1R is fucking awfull, there was a stage on this forum a few years ago everyone worshipped the T1R. Its nothing special in the dry, shit in the wet, doesnt last long either. For the same price you can get Rain Sport 2s, which last longer, very good in the wet, very good in the dry.

    http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Toyo/T1R.htm

    vs

    http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Un...ainsport-2.htm

Another tyre to consider is the Toyo CF1, similar price, not as good looking if that really matters to you. Doesnt last as long as the rain sport and not as good in the wet as the rainsport, but very good in the dry. Its better than the T1R anyway.

    RS2's. As Moch said.

i use that site as well but tbh, they need to do better filtering options as i cba to troll through only th hatchback reviews in th relevant size. otherwise, that's a good site. can we vote please? helps passers by get a quick peak at your opinions. cheers

I went from CF1's to T1R's and noticed no difference.

My T1R's are great in the wet + dry + snow! For £33 each, can't complain.
  8. #8
Currently running T1R's, safe to say I won't be doing so again!
Had RS2's for a small time last year, much better!
    My vote goes to RS2's!

maybe not literally that many times but i've seen the comparison multiple times and never got a quick answer ; there are lots of mixed reviews for T1Rs but relatively consistent positive comments for RS2

33?! where are you getting them and what size?!

im buying my rs2's now, £33.25 each! that is in 195/50/15 though, the 45 profiles are £49.40!! thats an extra £65 for a set of 4, so im going for the 50's!

I'v never used rs2 so cant comment on them. Last year i used t1r's and found they were very good in dry, wet and snow, only downside to them was that they don't last aslong as others

jesus that's a huge price dip for 5% sidewall increase! it says over 3% diff from OE, do you feel th effects on fuel eco?
  13. #13
ive only just ordered them after i wrote that message, so cant comment yet

but yea, my car is stripped in the back, no passengers etc, being fitted to a set of steels, want to use it as a track car so im not bothered about the higher profile, most saxos/106's use 50 profiles for track wheels as they are so much cheaper and a wider choice
  14. #14
bought my t1r's in early december had no problems in snow or rain getting a fair bit of hard driving now the weather is getting better done nearly 6k with them and there still like new finding them quite good tbh

Rainsport 2's all day long. One of my favourite tyres. T1R's were shocking in my opinion, average in the dry, terrible in the wet and wore stupidly quick on the edges. I dont get the hype around them personally but tyres are a very personal thing, one persons opinion will naturally be completely different to anothers.
  16. #16
I fitted tyres which were 4% larger and they went through my front wheel arch liner

    185/60/14 is 4% larger than 195/45/15

my 14's are Uniroyal RainExpert. Great in the rain, snow and mud. crap on corners, but that's because of the profile I chose

My 15's are T1R, grip in anything other than dry conditions is terrible. especially in a straight line, or even accelerating gently on a corner. I had Marangoni on the front and they were a tad better for grip if it was damp or dry.

I don't agree with T1R's wearing that fast. you're all a bunch of hoons my car has had the same set on it almost 2 years. O-o

i agree with the wear if your harsh round the bends any tyre will wear fast but if your smooth in and out of the twistys they should last a good while imo
  18. #18
I dont think the T1Rs are too bad, but it does depends on what tyres you've used previously (try a 160bhp metro on camac auriga plastic tyres I dare you!). T1Rs dont last long though, I fitted a set and they are 3/4s worn in 6000 miles
  19. #19
Rainsports 2 over t1r any day. Rainsports Are better dry or wet.
  20. #20
Got rainsport 2's here on my cyclones, lovely tyres, hold my VTS well in wet and dry
  21. #21
I have T1Rs, decent tyres imo. I Paid £98 fitted for 2 which isn't bad either I reckon. I'll give rainsports a try though when I next buy tyres.

    PE2 / PS3 ftw.
  24. #24
glad i bought my rainsports now

however i asked for a quote from a tire place in my town and they said "what do you want uniroyals for they are shocking" lol was probably just generalising the uniroyals hes 'tested', looked like more of a pen pusher than a hardcore trackday enthusiast so i didnt take his comments too seriously lol

plus ive had first hand experience with them and was amazed

Very good tyre, but not in the same price range as these mentioned. So cant be compared.

haha I had the same reaction from one place too "why do you want Uniroyals?" its not that often you get people specifically ask for that tyre. Very good tyre though.

They used to have their own race series too, not sure if it still exists though.

Has anyone compared Goodyear Eagle GSD3s to Rainsports?

Yes, they both have basically the same characteristics. I would say the GSD3s are better in the dry though.

The GSD3 wear faster than the Rainsport2s.

The price difference makes the Rainsport2s the better choice.

Didnt think you can get GSD3s any more though?

I ran a set of GSD3 and RainSport 2s back to back a few years ago.
  28. #28
Quite a few sites listing the goodyears, i actually found them easier to get than rainsports.

Just about to buy some new tyres and the two seemed to have similar characteristics, albeit the Goodyears have a really low dB rating

they last two and a half times longer than the toyo at the very least, also grip much harder wet and dry, and only cost £15 more.

£15? I though PS and PE were over £100 or near enough £100 a tyre at least where as T1R is £45 lol

  32. #32
    £45 for T1rR
    £51 For Rainsport 2s
    £82 for PE

    All in 195 45 15

More than double the £15 difference he mentioned futher up though! Different price range completley.

I asked in at costco, who normally have good prices on tyres, got quoted 103 quid iirc for Michelins.

    Ooft.

I don't like these 2. Don't get me wrong, loads of grip etc but the T1r doesn't last (too soft) and completely falls apart, and I find the rainsports road noisy + too much rolling resistance.

Time is irrelevant, how many miles did you get out of them?
  38. #38
I found RS2s to be awful. They were rated highly on here before, fitted them on my first VTS and still found it slippy in a few places.

Now have the Alfa and they came on each corner. Fine in the dry but still don't get the confidence in the wet.
  39. #39
Depends what you were slipping on. When the rain mixes with oil on the road you're gonna slip on any tyre I would have thought? Only once have i wheel span in the rain on my rain sport 2

Well the previous owner did at least 10,000 on them, and I've done 4000 on them so far.

I'll go out and check the tread depth. it's not at the indicators though.

Time is relevant, if you fit tyres which have had a long shelf life before being fitted they can harden up without cracking which lets them last longer but less grip O_o like plastic RC wheels

anything is gonna be better than the condoms i had before haha

in the wet even while moving my car would just light the wheels up while accelerating hard coming on the dual carriage ways etc even with my bodies my car was hardly an animal to spin the wheels up while im already moving lol coming out of busy junctions was a night mare in the wet just didnt move anywhere lol i cant wait to get these tires on, first time in my driving career that ive actually cared what tires i have one as i used to be naive and not even think about tires

my first experience with r2's was in tom5190's car, iirc he held the revs at around 3k, let the clutch go and the car just pulled away no slipping at all in heavy rain, i was amazed and wanted them ever since

Indeed they can crack overtime though we're talking quite a few years. I buy from places that don't have any shelves (i.e. avoid twitfit). 14.000 is about average to be honest, pales a bit when I can squeeze 40.000 out of michelins.

Of course that's without wheelspinning or trashing around, I talked to someone (vectra gsi) who would burn a pair of premiums every 2-3.000

I've just bought some dunlops, not cracked. shelved since 1986.

    Got them cheap.
