Driveshafts

  1. #1
    Hi guys, cheers for looking.

Basically, my driveshafts are fubar. Went from ticking to donking over the last few days, just wondering what I will need for changing them? More than capable of doing it as done mechanics at college and a few months in a garage.

Things I've thought of so far include:
    • driveshafts (left and right ofc)
    • gearbox oil
    • seals?

Tools that I need would be:
    • jack and stands (got)
    • big arse breaker bar (need)
    • hammer and chisel (got)
    • socket (need and what size?!)
    • container for old oil (got)

Think that's everything?? Anybody that can think of something I've missed. Cheers.

socket size on my vts is 30 as for big arse breaker bar i got this

you'll need a 3/4" to 1/2" adaptar too depending upon your socket sizes! just make sure you remove all the stacking before removing! think that's it!

Also i think the driver's side driveshaft has a circlip so you'll need some circlip pliers to remove it - pretty sure that's what i read in haynes

Punch might be useful to tap the pinch bolts out of the hubs. drivers side has no circlip its just a pull out job however you'll need to remove the shaft from the intermediate bearing carrier undoing the small retaining bolts and pull out of the bearing carrier - its easier to do that than fit the bearing carrier back to the shaft then bolting that to the block.
Fix near drive shaft seals (AX caged ones if you can get them) too
Hub nuts are done up to something like 240nm or 250, so a big torque wrench is needed or just do them up to "FT"

Cheer mate. I've got a big 1/2" torque wrench already. Hopefully it goes up to that. Just gotta find time to do these now and hope they don't die before then.

do we need new seals for the gear oil we'll be replacing?

might be worth doing it at the same time although I don't usually, just be careful as you put in and pull out the shafts.. can always pop them out and inspect
