Oil Level Gauge

  1. #1
    Hi guys,

Just done an oil change on the VTS - when the key is at the first click the gauge on the right should show the oil level, correct? Mine moves a little off the stop but doesn't go up to full (the dipstick is showing full).

Is that normal? Could the dipstick be the wrong one for the car and the oil level is actually low?

    Cheers!

If youve just changed the oil, wait an hour or so for it all to drain to the bottom first...

Ah it was a good hour or so after I'd done the oil - I'll check it again tonight though as it's been a while now since I did it.

There is also a sensor on the sump for the oil mate,if you keep on getting a low reading it may be worth changing it.

You aren't talking about the oil temperature, are you?
  6. #6
As said the one one the right is oil temperature not level :s

A`h my bad,not totally familiar with vts engines.

It's temperature when the engine is started but I'm sure I've read and been told that on the first ignition click its supposed to show the oil level... Am I mistaken?

Its right, the sensor is on the front of the block.
    Pointing down Into the sump.

mine is on a few seconds after i started the car aswell..

It's weird - I've noticed this morning that a icon appears on the digital dash display when you start it with lots of small 0's on it with what looks like a 'jet' icon - would that be the oil level seeing as my gauge seemingly does nothing on first click?

Are you talking about the yellow light that looks like a dipstick?

If there is a problem with the oil level it should flash for about 15 seconds.

It's that icon but my clocks look different, will take a photo at lunch and post it up.

That icon appears on the digital display with 6 'o''s seemingly indicating some sort of level...

The 'ooooo" on the digital dash (LCD) display the oil level - on the VTS (doesn't work on my VTR) leave the ignition on a few secs before starting the engine and they'll appear. Right hand gauge is oil temp and left is water temp.

Aah cool. I'm guessing that the ooooos turn to ______ if it's empty?

So what does this mean? Thanks.

Below there are six dashes like this "------" that flashes.

Yes - full house of "ooooo" (can't remember if it's 5 or 6) is full and then they drop off as the level goes down. Mine seems to fluctuate between 4 and 6 depending how the sensor feels but usually show full house when the dipstick shows full. Don't think there's lines when the "o" is not there just a space - can't remember exactly though (too many other cars to drive, lol)

Aah excellent, that means my sensor is showing the same as the dipstick

    Cheers all

If you never get the row of "ooooo" then IMHO either the sensor is dead or you have no oil in the engine - my money's on option 1

Yes probably, the dipstick shows 1/2 so i should have around 1,8 of oil left.
