Important! : Over heated spark plug

  1. #1
I have a mk2 Vts , strait through decated saxport system, over a period of time it developed a slight lumpy idle so other day I decided to clean icv , put it back in and still the same, so I thought I'd have a look at the spark plugs that I put in only 3 month ago and noticed that the tip from the 2nd one in from the left was slightly distorted like it had been getting too hot ( I used nkg plugs) anyway swapped the plug and she's idleing like a dream and driveing like one, however I have a funny feeling that this problem may comeback over time, if it does what could cause this? Ok I have the 2nd lambda capped (maybe running a bit rich) possible cause of the over heated plug? Here are pics

Doesnt look too bad, might just be generally old worn out plugs.

Running rich would make it run cooler if anything.

Try using cooler plugs (7) if it bothers you.

    Dear Wobby82,
Firstly, looking only at your spark plug, I think your car is running a tad on the rich side.
First question I need to ask is an obvious one really, is it just the one plug, or is it as I would imagine that all four are the same ?
However, I don,t profess to be an expert on " tuned " engines. What I would do would be as previously mentioned in this thread that you put a slightly cooler plugs in. At least that would sort your worries out about it happening again.
Lastly, I would try and check for the reason why the car is running a tad rich, could it be an over fueling problem ? or some other reason.

Lovely reply vince thank u, I'm wondering if it's because I only have the one lambda plugged in as I have a saxport system witch has a dummy cat, also it was just the one plug, please can u tell me what kind of cooler plugs to try? Also my Vts does 100 miles to about £13:00 so it's not really over furling that much

I may stand to be shot down in flames, but if my memory serves me correct, I think you need to go down to NGK BP5ES,s

As i said, id personally want to fit colder plugs (7) if your concerned they are over heating.

The higher the number the smaller the insulation inside the plug.
Smaller the insulation means the quicker the heat leaves the plug into the cylinder head which = a cooler running plug (in theory).
