VTR Gearbox/Clutch Bearing Noise

  1. #1
    Hi all,

    A hoping you knowledgable types can help me establish the cause of a horrendous noise that started emanating from my VTR on the way to work this morning!

    Firstly, it's a 2000MY VTR (facelift) and the noise in question would appear (based on much googling and reading of older threads) either a clutch release bearing or a gearbox bearing of some sort (input shaft bearing or dry internal bearing?) but I can't quite work out which.

    So, the noise only seems to start after the car is well up to temperature, it took about 10-12 miles of driving at dual carriage way speed to occur, nothing before, and about the same on the way home. It only seems to happen above30mph ish, based on some on the fly trial-and-error tests it doesn't seem to tally with engine speed, more roadworks wheel speed, I don't think it made a difference if clutch was in or out either.

    So, what do you guys think? Cutch release or some form of gearbox problem? Or something entirely different!

    If you need any more info just shout, I'll do my best to supply

    Thanks in advance!

    JB.

    When driving along push the clutch in, does the noise stop.

    Yes = clutch release bearing

    No = gearbox

    thanks for the reply Misterk, from memory of the brief tests i did when i heard it the first time it didn't make a difference if clutch was in or out.

    Assuming it is gearbox related, what kind of job is it to fix? i'm assuming gearbox out, is this a major PITA and does anyone have any ideas which bearing it could be as i understand there are a few in the mix?

    thanks again,
    James.

    how bad is this noise? If its anything gearbox or clutch related the box has to come off anyway.
    My brand new valeo release bearing makes a bit of a noise to be honest

    sounds like a wheel bearing other than the getting up to temperature when it starts part.
    if you can get the car jacked up onto axle stands both sides at the front. get the engine running and go up threw the gears.
    now get out the car, and where safe to do so have a look underneath and a listen for the noise. see if you can locate where its coming from, if you can also get a video of the noise on post it up on here

    Hi all,

    Cheers for the input, my mechanic said it could be a wheel bearing too so the car is in with him for diagnosis today - ill report back when I know what it is

    Thanks again,
    JB.
