Changing Gearbox

  1. #1
Hello, a friend of mine has managed to smash his gearbox on a speedbump and now needs to replace the gearbox casing, just wondered if its a fairly straight forward affair on the saxo if we have the right equipment and tools, etc.

Any guidance would be gratfully receieved, would it be a good idea to buy a haynes manual?

    Thanks in advance

Haynes manual is a necessity mate, tell you how to do everything! i recently had to change my gearbox on my 1.1. The casing had a gash init from where something inside had flung off an cut a hole straight through.
The actual casing is only compressed tin ( i think) so you could just bang the bumps out an fill it in with some sort of metal sealant.
There's hardly any oil pressure in there so i don't think you have to worry about that.
Or just replace the casing like you said!

its a pain in the ass but possible! id know ive done it more times than ive had birthdays! lol on 3 205's and my saxo vts twice! first take out the battery and its holder and then take off the starter motor, loosen the passenger side engine mount, dont take it out just loosen it, undo the speedo cable/sensor, take out the driveshafts by undoing the massive nut on the hub and take out the lower arm on the drivers side u got 2 11mm nuts to undo that holds back a bearing undo the bottom engine mount take off the gearbox linkages, reversing light swith, 2 earth wires on the gearbox the lower exhaust mount, its a spring with a 10mm nut then withdraw the bolt with a 8mm deep reach socket and a plate that covers the flywheel between the lower half of the engine and the gearbox. then support the sump with a jack and a bit of wood, undo the right hand engine mount completely make sure the jack has enough height to lift the nut away from the engine mount and the engine is completely supported by the jack before you undo the last few threads, loosen the 3 13mm bolts for the engine mount of the gearbox undo the 4 allen bolts that hold the engine to the gearbox lower the engine a couple of inches and completely remove the 3 13mm bolts on the mount of the gearbox, i 4got, i need to stick it on axle stands and take the wheels off! lol and just slide the gearbox off of the clutch, hope this helps!

yeh you could prob pick a gearbox up from a scrappy 4 about £100 my 205 i had cost £120 4 a 1.4 g/box n my saxo vts was £160 so i asume a 1.1 wud b a bit cheaper lol and i would defo buy a haynes manual and to be on the safe side change both driveshaft seals and the input shaft seal i bought them yesterday for £22.14 smear some grease around the seal before u slot the driveshafts in to provide a bit of lubrication n help stop u damaging the seals wen u put the driveshafts in.(yes ive blown my gearbox up) lol pinion shaft bearing got anaihalated and went thru the casing. DOH!
