266 brake set up.

Going to need new pads and discs on the front of my vtr soon, so I'm seeing as an opportunity to upgrade.

Buuut my old man keeps saying that standard brakes are good enough and ill lock up really easy with 266s is this true or will they atop me faster without locking me up?

I understand that obviously if I stand on the brakes I will lock up either way.

I have 266 Lucas breaks they may not be better or they may be better that's a debate in itself but since having mine I can honestly say I feel safer breaking hard with mline and I feel I do stop better but it's all personal preff

Is it really better stopping power you're after or do you just want the bigger brakes?

If it's really stopping power you are wanting then it depends on your tyres and suspension setup in conjunction with the brakes as to how well the car will stop.

It is knowing thy ill be able to stop when I go for a spirited drive over some back roads, just more of a piece of mind that I will stop and that it will feel better braking hard, not get the feeling that I'm not gonna stop in time.

you want the smallest discs and calipers that will lock the wheels, and yet not fade under your desired use. Generally you'll be fine with standard sized discs with uprated pads and a flush of new decent brake fluid. Going larger discs will reduce fade if you're constantly driving hard, but with that comes increased unsprung weight and moment of inertia issues that you can honestly feel.

100% agree iirc the brembo's are ally calipers and no heavier than a 266 setup, ive got std size, plain vented girling disks and rc6 pads... They stop like youve hit a wall... I didnt have my harness on a test trive and hit the brakes and slid out the seat... I wanna go bigger cus because over a 20min practice they start to fade, hopefully a larger surface will disperse the heat better...

yeah the brembo calipers and 283mm discs are actually lighter than a standard gti/vts setup - the standard calipers are made of pig iron. But if you're sticking (OP, not you Jasper) with "off the shelf" calipers, ie a gti6 or 307 setup, then the cons outweigh the pro's IMO. Of course, small discs don't look as good but... function/form etc. Personal Preference there.

The bigger discs and calipers will require less effort to apply maximum braking so may inspire confidence without really affecting braking distance.
They also have a greater heat capacity. Greyjasper51 - sounds like you are cooking your brake fluid as you can't really fade the CL Brakes pads! The larger pad surface and disc surface will help but i'd be aiming some cooling ducts at the brakes first!

Kev I agree - I was going to mention brake ducting

Thanks for all the info, I did forget to say that I do intend on doing a track day or two, so I don't want fade or anything.

Yes. I weighed them on the wifes kitchen scales. Notwithstanding her irritation, good data was gained

Ah doesnt matter anyway. I might be changing them for something else somepoint next month. willwood

a bit OT, but I´m using xsi brake caliber, plain vented discs and rc6 pads. Never had even tinybit of fade, and stopping is stunning! I don´t yet have air ducts, but I´m gonna build them too.

Get some Castrol SRF in there if you're having problems. You won't have any after!
