Odd fuel gauge behaviour!?!

Recently replaced my fuel pump, and as your all probably aware the fuel level sender is also part of it, so consequently this was also replaced. Now I'm not to sure what year of saxo my new pump came off but my car is a 97, 1.1. The problem I'm having is its telling lies basically... when its full it shows around 3/4's on the gauge or empty with fuel light on when just under half!?! Can anyone shed any light on this... anyone with a similar experience? Is the fuel sender bad or the gauge?

There is a thread called fuel Guage fix, possibly yours is starting to develop an earth problem? Have a read, worth a try.

Pretty sure that mk1 senders are seperate from the fuel pump(they sit alongside)under the rubber bung next to the fuel pump.

No, its definitely attached to the pump. They come as a unit on all saxo models from what I can gather. Definitely the case on mine either way.. the best way to describe the symptoms I'm having would be to say the gauge in the dash is too big... by that I mean the senders version of full, is only 3/4s full on the dash. Its definitely not an earthing or wiring issue, I have no erratic needle bouncing or petrol light coming on and off 7 times etc.. just doesn't show a true reading on the dash.

Not according to my Haynes manual.

I have two blanking plates under the rear seats. But only one actually covers anything, the fuel pump/sender unit. Maybe the older models are desperate, but this one is definitely combined. Had a quick look on eBay and a few breakers just out of curiosity and could only find the combined units. My Haynes also explains the removal and refitting of a combined unit. My saxo is a 97 model.

That's what mine and a lot of others look like... can't find your separate one? Care to enlighten me? Picture perhaps?

I've had mine 2 years and only ran out twice, once because I was seeing how many miles i could do to a tank, ran out at work and had to siphon the fuel out of two petrol fishing lanterns to make our To a station lol!

2nd time on way to petrol station.

I just fill up full then run it to 300 miles and fill up again, best way to do it.

Pump youve got is for a digital gauge and you've got a analog gauge by the sound of it
