Sump stuck on

  1. #1
Replacing my sump, removed all the bolts and it seems its stuck on by some sort of sealant. Gave it a tap with a mallet but its pretty solid. I dont rely want to hammer a flat blade screwdriver to prize it apart incase it warps the bottom of the block.
    What can i do?

I would do that but hit all 4 corners slowly to loosen it

Get a tile scrapper and carefully break the sealent

Gently run an old stanley knife blade around the join.

It's just the old gasket. You won't damage the block if you're careful and gentle.

    No don't do this.

As stevo said use a stanley knife into the gasket if that fails tap a small wooden wedge into one side ans slowly work your way around.

Small screwy and hammer at all corners normally breaks the seal if blade don't work as above, just be gentle it'll be fine

ok cheers guys, ill try and cut it..

its definitely a sealant though, I don't think there is even a gasket there.

I have a new sump and gasket, the new sump has some slight remains of white sealant around it, not a lot, its still flat, Would it be ok like that or should I scrape it all off so its back to metal?

You want both surfaces as clean as you can buddy. Bit of a bummer to do but imagine if you put it on and it leaks a tiny bit...and you have to start again. Not nice!
