mot failure on rust now fixed ..should i waxoil or hammerite

  1. #1
just had car dropped off, failed mot on rear brake cylinders, which i knew were gone so didnt mind paying

but he had to weld patches under drivers arch, from what i can see under bonnet a patch under ecu think it was on farside left but cant see where else was done ill have to ask

the other side front top arch is going under fuse box , i have some hammerite in the garage, shall i just spend saturday afternoon hammeriting it to death under the bonnet and jacking car up and hammeriting evreything i see metal!

he has quoted 60 to waxoil car which seems cheap,it was advised rear sub frame corroded but not weak, would hammeriting this reduce rusting and maybe pass mot next year

    what do you think ?

If it's already rusting painting over it with hammerite won't stop the corrosion.

If you get rid of as much of the rust as possible with a wire brush then put some rut remedy on then paint over it you might get away with it.

Clean it up and then rust remedy then paint over if you wish. I used a rust killer Hammerstein paint and then a waxoyl type stuff over the top of that, not to everyone's personal taste or choice but it'll do

    Dear Richhall1712,
One thing I think you should be aware of, is that Hammerite isn,t petrol resistant. ( if you painted under the bonnet and had a petrol pipe split or blow off, the Hammerite would go all pickled and it would peel off )
For the underside of your car I would recommend stain black stove enamel ( same stuff you use for painting a multi-fuel burner that burns wood or coal )
    I hope this helps,
    Vince,

    Vince,

    I wouldn't.

The rust will need treating with something like kurust. ~Then i would personally use this. U-pol gravi guard. Its then up to you if you want to paint over it with gloss black. I personally would clean the full underside of your car with a jet wash and some de-greaser and a stiff brush then clean all rust spots with a wire brush and treat with ku rust, then primer all metal areas with a metal etch primer and use the gravi guard on the full under side of the car.

Also £60 to wax oyl under your car isn't cheap it will take him literally 5 mins to do.

If you really want to wax oyl under your car you can get the wax oyl in the aerosol and jack your car up and clean the under side and apply it to one side at a time it might take you a hour but you will know its done correctly and save yourself £60. Do some research first there are much better products than wax oyl.

A couple of links for ya.

2 aerosols do a full under body. Make sure you clean the break pipes first.

I read somewhere you shouldn't paint or coat brake pipes as they can't see if they are corroded when on the mot? Saying that they are painted from the factory I think, so maybe I'm talking bollocks

In a general service at ford we use to clean them with a brass wire brush then give them a coat of cavity wax to stop salt corrosion and yeah they are painted with a green anti rust paint from factory.

When I worked in a garage we used this stuff. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUPER-STRO...item3cbde9ec80 I don`t know if its the same as k-rust but its good.It turns the metal black & can be painted afterwards.
