Yet another problem! Coolant??

    So..........

I toppped up the coolant a few days ago and may have slightly over filled it. As in the coolant level reached the cap basically.

So I'm driving to work this morning and the warning light comes on, on the dashboard as if my car is over heating. This only happens when the car is at a stand still. When I get going, it drops to normal again.

Could it just be that I've over filled the coolant or does it sound like something more sinister?

PS The revs were really erratic when first starting the car this morning. Wouldnt drop below 1100 for a while then were up and down like a damn elevator!

Fan not cutting in? And alot of saxos in traffic will go up and the fan comes in and brings it back down.... As for the revving check and clean the icv (idle control valve)

Would you say it was safe to keep driving?? Just don't wanna sit in traffic and the car break down.

why did you fill it up that high? The reason it has a max line is because coolant/water expands when it gets hot. Suck a bit out so it sits at the max level

To be honest, the bottle is so old and worn that I can't see the max/min level markers so I just kept slowly adding coolant and the BAm, it was at the top.

I think i'll take your advice and try and suck some out though.

adding more coolant shouldnt cause it to over heat though, just will usually expell some from the header tank. Try it with it at a normal level, how come you were topping up any way - was it empty?

I topped it up because I was basically checking all the fluid levels and when I opened the bonnet the coolant 'bottle' as it were was hissing even though the cap was as tight as it could so I assumed it was dry. I can't see the marker levels at all.

I shook the bottel etc but from what I could see, I couldnt see any fluid, it drank nearly a whole litre bottle of coolant!?

Sounds like you need to bleed the coolant mate.

Trip the garage for me tomorrow I think. Cheers for the help fellas.

sounds like you might need to flush the system if its that filthy, then rebleed
