who can do a BE gearbox conversion?

  1. #1
Fancy getting my car uprated to BE how much to drive in / drive out...
  2. #2
Don't think there's any where that do a drive in drive out service. Well I couldn't find anywhere that's why am doing my own
  3. #3
Well i would be willing to pay some one to do it for me (must have done before and be all good )
  4. #4
Try companys like pug1off atspeed constella etc

Is it a straight foward conversion?
  6. #6
It's not to bad to do to be honest well so far only had bit it finding the right part numbers for cable clutch conversion ( think iv cracked it now but waiting for parts before I post any numbers)
  7. #7
it's not a straight gear box swap no, needs custom driveshafts, mounts etc... otherwise i would do it
  8. #8
i know it needs the shafts and mounts fabricating, and hubs swapping ect, but didnt know how bad it was to do. Ill need to do it in the future as im nearly done with the turbo project

Speak to Constella. Can supply all the parts (source your own gearbox) so you can easily do it at home or will do a "drive in drive out" for you.

It's pretty common now so frequently done. Needs custom hubs and/or shafts depending on the actual spec you want but rob will look after you

Not sure about drive in drive out jobbie, simply because there is so many different & custom parts to the conversion. But I'm sure any of the companies mentioned above could do it without a problem over a few days work.

I'm just beginning to get parts together to do my conversion to BE over the winter

    Satchell engineering can do it.

    Speak to Martin at Tweeq'd.

He was the pioneer for undertaking this conversion and wrote the original BE conversion thread for everyone. He's also the first guy to do a 6 speed BE conversion in an ax.

Unlike ATSpeed, the engine will also be level as the mounts ATSpeed supply put the engine out of line.

That's where mine will be going mate, along with some other bits and bobs he will be fitting at the same time

Ok thanks all, lots of good information, like with jp I'm planning to get it done over winter, once it's been converted is it fairly straight forward to drop in and out of another shell? Lastly can you get close ratio gears for them ?

JP I'm guessing maybe there suspension redesign kit?
  15. #15
Decided on your future engine spec yet? And yes I believe you can get short ratio's, apparently the 205gti is pretty decent?
  16. #16
Will look into it! Not decided as yet I want to get the car set up and used to it before deciding to run more power I think bigger shafts etc is the way to go from the be box, then want another gripper diff just a case of picking the box and getting someone to fit over winter

One thing for certain, i recommend getting a proper BE conversion cable, i used a firstline one from a berlingo that was told fitted but doesnt even fit in the bulkhead well (i was told to drill it out bigger so fits onto a lip) and when pressing the pedal it doesnt even return so ive gone for a ATspeed cable and fitting a new pedalbox.

If i had the cash id go to colin satchell and get his mounts, custom shafts, etc then get a ATspeed cable.

Ive done alot myself like machining of the hubs, spacers, driveshafts to lenght.

What makes you say the atspeed mounts put the engine out of line? Surely it can't be out of line as that is governed by the engine mounts??

    Atspeed mount...

Been told If you take 14mm off the top of the gear box where the mount bolts to it will level the engine up

Its not only the ATspeed mounts, spoox mounts and the ones ive got that titch made are the same as the ones used on the BE boxed rally cars. Only available solution is the satchell mounts for a level engine but means cutting and welding.

My engine now sits level (hint: I'm not using Satchell mounts). Constella have done my mounts so speak to them if it's an issue for you

Id noticed something about robs been working on your car. Interesting, does the engine sit at the same position longitudaly meaning no need to change shafts?

I may give them a email about them then - I also want to get my car finished! Been thinking of getting a price.
  24. #24
Did that involve cutting the battery tray at all Ross? or did you machine the gearbox casing so it sits level?
  25. #25
    I'll be completely honest...

I have no fucking idea jow its done lol. Really. Rob just did it at the same time as sorting the shafts etc.
  26. #26
    Cut the gearbox casing,
Then if your running vibra technics or spoox normal ecu mount then machine down the aluminium outer till level.

A side note, i had my BE hubs fitted to my struts but the spacer wasnt fitted, i ordered a new bearing but hadnt checked it with the discs/calipers yet. Checked yesterday, its spot on in the middle of the caliper but on the other strut the hub was machined a little bit smaller (36.85/90) so hub slides in but using the spacer on that one the disc sits to the one side, then vice versa without it so needs about 1.5mm spacer.

Going to order a new hub and try do the same as the other so otherside doesnt need one. I machined the hubs upto the correct part others do.
