Wiring a Fan Switch.. Which Wires?

  1. #1
Right, had to get a new fan, because the 306 is twin fan, one wasn't spinning, so i had to get a new one to replace it.. I think only one ever spins, 2 if the air con is on, which doesn't work..

So I'm looking to wire in a fan switch straight from the fans, to inside the car, so i can flick both in if I'm in traffic.. Now, my problem is which wire is the live.. On one fan, it has a red wire, and a green/yellow wire, So obviously the red is the live for the fan.. The other fan however, has 2 yellow wires going to it..

Where the wires run to, there is a 1, and a 2, would i be right in assuming if the red one goes to 1, on one fan, the live on the other will also go to number 1?

Just looking at running a fused wire from the live to a switch, then another fused wire to a live on the car.. Giving me an instant on off switch, with the car also capable of switching the one fan on itself..

If anyone has a better suggestion on how to switch it, I'm game to hear it!

    Pictures to help you see..

    Red and Yellow/green

    Yellow yellow..

Numbers one and 2, which is on both fans, going to the fan plug..

Sounds logical to me.. But knowing Peugeot/Citroen we are probably both wrong, try and find a wiring diagram on the net mate?

Been trying, its a struggle to find! My car needs to be back together tomorrow, so need this sussing, to save taking the front end off again next week!

Guessing the vts fans will be wired similarly, I'll see what I can find.

Looks like the right fan is high speed and the left fan is low speed, they are operated on a change over relay, do you have a multi meter?

1 is your feed, 2 feed the second fan, red is your earth

Noop, i don't.. There are 3 relays in the housing.. Saying that.. I have stolen the air con fan, well, what i call it.. The right hand fan, and put it on the left hand side of my fan housing.. As the other one on the new fan set was also nackered like mined..

I take your air con doesn't work then?

No, air con has never worked, the button lights up, but no colder air.. Guessing it hasn't been gassed in years.. Will it be the fan thats actually low speed, or the fact its getting less current, spinning it slower or what?

Found this, he says he has both fans to one switch, and one fan to another.. So must be able to run them both together..

The fan is low speed, the red cable you were questioning is definitely an earth

So, original question, which wire on each one, do i key into, to set a live to, to set the fans off..
  11. #11
Green/yellow wire is the earth I meant, not sure, you need to bridge the connections so as the two fans are on the same feed, try running a wire from the first relay to the cons fan and remove the original wire from it, make sure your earth is fine and it should work.

Hmm I'll have a faff about with it tomorrow!

Let me know how it goes

Smifffffffff....... Do you have the switch in the rad itself? A blue one?
  15. #15
    what kind of switch?
  16. #16
I think he means the thermostatic one
  17. #17
I have no idea... The fan does come on by itself, but only one comes on.. I want to wire a switch into the car, so i can turn them both on together if need be.. Just need to know if someone knows which of the 2 wires is a live, so i can key into it..

Back to this, looking into it, both fans are high and low speed from what i can find.. Different circuits for high and low speed..

So i need to find which wires control the high speed, and power them up it would seem..
  19. #19
Right... I think i have sussed it...

Power goes in number 1 on the left fan, back out number 2, and is switched to the right fan, going down cable one again...

So if i power cable 1, on both fans, this should set them both off, right?

Look at the diagram, it's the right fan really, so just loop them off that and bypass the changeover relay

Run a cable from left motor number 2 to right motor number one, should work mate
  21. #21
Just realised thats for the slow speed..

Thats when they are high speed.. They run separate circuits..

But i want a switch in the car, so i can turn the fans on.. So if i put a bridge from left motor 1, to right motor number 1, and go from there to a switch in the car, then from the switch to a live.. When i flick the switch on, giving it power, both fans will turn on.. Yes?
  22. #22
Theoretically the switch needs to be battery side of the circuit as apposed to load side
  23. #23
    What do you mean?
  24. #24
A relay is a switch in essence, so you need a live from the fuse box, to your switch, you will need two separate fuses for both fans to run as the two will draw too many amps and just blow the fuse. So you have to from battery > fuse box > your switch> to the fans
  25. #25
So if i took my live from the fusebox, to my switch, then from my switch to the fans, that would work?

Or will i need 2 fuses in each wire from the fans to my switch as well?

Ive tried to make sense of this but as far as i can work out is that you want a switch to run them both when your in traffic? And the switch doesnt need to be live side... Can be neutral side... How you think ecus control fans and stuff? Transistor switch the neutral... Also if you get a normal switch and run the fan live/neutral through it youll blow it to shit!! Fans use about 30A to start up and spin... About 6 when spinning... Your halfords switch will be rated at 3.... The easiest way todo it is get a 5 pin relay and using 1+2 (french style relay) as your switched live from inside the car (fused) and neutral (doesnt matter whats what way)... Now heres the fun bit...

After the fan relay output, cut the fan wire and plug that into pin 5 and 4... Then on pin 3, 2 wires to the fans... When you flick the switch you have 2 fans running and when switch is off then you have normal fan

I'll just let the car figure out when to turn the fans on i think..
