Tips for picking up a used gearbox

  1. #1
    Hi Everyone.

My 2002 VTR 100k will be needing a new box quite soon.

Can anyone give me tips of what to look our for when picking up a used box?
Apart from low mileage, I am not really sure what to look for.

Any one had horror stores? Anything that can be checked that will prevent me buying a dud box?

    Should I get a VT box or a 1.1?

    All help greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    ^ hur hur, very good.

OP: Best bet is to check the box in person. If it's off the car then try and wiggle the input shaft. If it mores more than about half a mm at the end of the shaft or clunks, the input shaft bearing is f*cked. Check that it selects all the gears smoothly and see if you can spin the input shaft by hand.

If it's still on the car listen for any whines, and check the synchro's work, particularly between 1st/2nd and 2nd/3rd.

Get a VTR box (same ratios as the 1.5d btw) unless you want silly short ratios. I have a 1.1 box on my 1.4 sx saxo and it's great for traffic light sprints, but sucks ass on the motorway (especially with a 3.5 inch sniper performance backbox!).

I did once buy a box off ebay for the saxo and was assured that it was perfect etc etc. Turned up, and it was even more f*cked than the one that was coming out (and that one had dumped all the balls from the input shaft bearing into the box!). That's why the saxo ended up with a 1.1 box.

    Makes sure it's not saggy.

    No weird marks anywhere.

No cum dribbling out of it.

Make sure its got the right code on it. Also dont buy a diesel or another VTR box imo

Put a vts box on my vtr last week and its brilliant, such a difference, no longer sluggish like the vtr box.

    Thanks for all the help!

Would anyone recommend getting a reconditioned box?

im sure there are plenty of decent 2nd hand ones for half the price of a recon one. A recon box is probably about half/or a third the value of the whole car!

I can get a recon box for 275. Saves the gamble of getting a box that could be worse or go soon too?

id rather spend £50 and take the risk personally
