The Mystery Fuse

  1. #1
    Hello Chaps.

I can't seem to work out what the green fuse at the bottom of the picture is for? (Next to the spiders nest which is now history! Beat it!)

When I got the car a month ago, it was burnt out so I replaced it. It has now burnt out again.

It doesn't match up to anything in the Haynes manual. The I've trailed the wires as far as I could but end up getting lost each time. It's like someone has added the fuse on themselves, only for it to burn out!

Everything on the car is standard apart from the angel eyes and the sound system. The sound system works fine along with everything else, the angels don't, they're wired up right? Do they take a separate fuse? The wires out of the fuse are brown and white?

Any help or guesses at what it could be would be nice. Ill be forever in your debt. Kinda.

Further info: the ecu light is on (think still a problem with lambda) the electric wing mirrors don't work.

    Apologies for the long read!

    It's for the air pump.

Blows cold air into the exhaust ports when the engine is cold to heat the cat converter up quicker.

They do burn out, the fuse in my GTI melted lol

30A is the correct fuse for it. the EML will come on if the pump isn't working or has a fault.

Also, you 5A fuse 11 is blown.

So do you think could be why the ecu light is on showing a possible fault with the lambda sensor ie are they connected in anyway?? The fault code was a p0141 O2 sensor hating circuit malfunction??

Ps thanks for the answer. I owe ya.

That's your 5A fuse that's triggered the p0141. the heater in the sensor may have shorted out?

Removing the fuse for the air pump doesn't trigger the EML apparently (just pulled the fuse on my car to see lol)

But it does trigger if you remove the air pump relay (next to the rad, it looks like the grey PAS relay)

So that's what that fuse it for, my old vts had that fuse and never new what is was for, didn't have a fuse in, if you fitted a fuse it would just melt in your fingers lol! Car still ran fine tho,

Cheers mate. You're a star. Change the 5a fuse and hey presto, eml light went out which was nice!

Replaced the 30a fuse, started the car, checked the new fuse and hey presto, this new one had also completely blown! Must have some sketchy wiring somewhere!

I owe you one mate, if you ever this way or vice versa the rounds on me.

Melting fuses seems to be a common problem :/ guess the pumps just wearing out.

good your EML light is out though
