Saxo VTS Engine management light - Problem

   Hi,
   Im currently driving a Citreon Saxo 1.6 VTS.
   
   Basicly i was coming up to a round about in 4th gear, So i dropped to the 1st Gear as i came to a stop. As i pulled away in 1st, i quickly changed to the 2nd gear and put my foot down.. This is when my car started to jolt and stutter like mad..(This is when the engine management light came on) So i quickly put it into 3rd gear and put my foot down again, but it carried on to jolt.. my car became louder (Not sure wether it was the exhaust or the engine that sounded loud).. So i ended up putting it in 5th gear and cruised down to a bus stop to pull over and check the car over.
   I couldnt see no blatent problems. I started the car back up and the engine light came back on but it didnt jolt or stutter again.. not sure if thats because i went easy on my car and not put my foot down.
   
   I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what the problem could be? (Btw i dont rag the shit out of my car)

   need to get it on a diagnostics ideally to see what fault codes were logged.
   We can guess at suspect things like possible coilpack, injectors ect.
   
   Need it plugged in to be sure and it will save you from changing un-necessary bits

   Also, Does it sound safe to do a short journey in? Or is it not advised to be driving around in it?

   Plug it in, easiest way. I wouldn't bother touching it if there's nothing obvious.

   Sounds like a misfire to me matey which will be your coil pack as this happen to my 1.1 which jolted and splattered around. But VTR 91 said get a diagnostic test done before doing anything!!
