Loss of power and thick black smoke? (01 clio 1.5d.. NOT a saxo!)

I know this is a saxo forum... But my dad has problems with his 2001 renault clio 1.5 diesel.

With it still being a 'french car', i thought someone on here could shed some light on the problem.

Most of the time, it drives spot on (very economical) but then he would have a sudden burst of thick, black smoke and loss of power.

It would go on for a while an then be back to normal?

Anyone head my in the right direction (apart from a garage )

Its the Egr valve mate. Take it out remove the motor then stick it in the dish washer if you have one. The clios are a bastard for this.

Once its removed and cleaned get yourself some dry grease and lube the whole lot up with it then re fit. Mine use to do it every 6 months without fail.

Also in the vid it doesnt show the internal part of the egr valve the rest of it looks like this
    7

It all needs to come out and to be cleaned and lubricated. Also if its a dci 65bhp then you would do some good running a tank of the diesel extra/ diesel excellium with a bottle of forte diesel system cleaner.

Sounds to me like the EGR valve, though dont rule out a trippy MAF sensor.
    Both easily fixed.
