3 stud drive shafts querey

   hi all!
   
   ive got myself a 3 stud p reg 1.1, when i took the shafts out i noticed that it uses tapered shafts and wheel bearings
   
   i was very confused... (as mk1's are supposed to use flat shafts and bearings)
   
   i did read somewhere that 3 studs use their own type of shafts rather than following the mk1/flat and mk2/tapered pattern
   
   so firstly do 3 studs have their own shafts or are they supposed to be flat?
   
   and if they are supposed to be tapered will they use just the normal tapered mk2 shafts?
   
   the hub nut on them is a small one though, and iirc the mk2 tapered shafts use the big hub nuts (usually a tell tale sign and telling which shafts you have without removing them)
   
   can anyone shed any light on this?

   this probably doesnt answer your question, but apparently some mk1s use the tapered shaft / big nut. My mk1 has them as standard for some reason.

   so your mk1 has tapered shafts?
   
   its weird that mine are tapered but use the smaller hub nut, ideally i want to buy a second hand 1.1 box and shafts to keep costs down so i dont wnat to waste my money buying a mk2 box and shafts to find out the shafts dont fit the 3 stud bearings i cant imagine they'd make three different types of shaft/bearing i might cross reference mk2 shafts part number with my 3 stud ones that might shed some light
   
   if i wasn't being tight id just buy one from a motor factors and use my reg number (not that it stops motor factors getting you the wrong one though!!) lol

   My mk1 also had the tapered/mk2 shafts. But mines 1999 so I think a very early p reg saxo should be flat, so I'd wager the 3 stud stuff is different.
   Whats up with the box by the way?

   well it thought it was the release bearing that was making the noise, i bought a clutch kit took the box off but the oil was very clean and the clutch and bearing looked really new, so i chucked it back together with a spare valeo bearing i had lying about which i knew to be a good one and it still makes the horrible noise so it seems to be the box at fault, it drives fine and goes in to gear fine, its probably just a ticking time bomb, it could last ages or could just go bang on me lol
   
   my brain tells me not to spend money on it and drive it in to the ground as its already pretty much paid for itself, but my heart wants me to fix her up but i need to be focusing on getting the red saxo back on the road really

   just been on ebay and they sell drive shafts that 'only fit 3 stud models' so i think ive answered my question

   My box rattles a bit when the clutch is up, but its only slight - It cant be the release bearing as its a new valeo one unless its a noisy one. I'm going to live with it and just run a decent box oil.
   Why not try some of that heavy shock oil in it first instead of a box swap? that said a good 1.1 box is pennies

   you say that but ebay is a rip off for boxes, most are £100+ lol but yea they are available cheap
   
   have you got a link for this shock oil? never heard of this before

    Can't remember who makes it but its called heavy shock oil and its pink. Few of the turbo or big power guys on here recommend it

    pretty pricey though about £40 to fill a saxo box could save a lot of time faffing about though

    thats the stuff. Might be worth a shot, £40 for 2l is better than a few hours taking the box out.
    Can keep the oil too providing it comes out the box easy enough
