New Radiator + Running warmer

This might be me being picky but on the original factory fitted radiator the temp on my mk1 vtr ran below halfway maybe 3-4mm below half in normal running and so in traffic it took a while for the fan to kick in so was only really in bad traffic the temp went above halfway and the fan would kick in. But since I fitted a new radiator same size etc but pattern part rather than valeo the car runs at the halfway mark in normal running which means in traffic the temp goes above halfway and the fan kicks in more frequently.

Is this higher running temp just because its a cheaper non-valeo radiator or could something else be causing this? I know its probably nothing to worry about but it annoys me seeing the temp needle rise above halfway everytime I'm in traffic!

Well, most cars at "normal" is directly in the middle of the gauge.

My GTI gauge sits just on or a bawhair under the halfway mark.

Bleed your cooling system again, that may help. but just put up with it. it's not even that accurate anyway

cheers I'm going to bleed it again like you said as this weekend the temp was fluctuating up and down quite a bit so guess there could be some air in system even though I was sure id got rid of all the air when I did it last time, never mind.

    Could be a dead sensor.

I've had fluctuating gauge in a 306 XSi, and it was a faulty sensor, it's the same on my GTI as well, it goes up and down constantly. it reads about half way on average though

    It's failure may be coincidence.

yeah you could be right I'll bleed it first just in case then replace sensor if its still happening, mind I also noticed my fuel gauge was fluctuating on level ground earlier so now I'm not so sure got two fluctuating gauges out of nowhere :s

Fuel gauges aren't accurate until 10 minutes or so of driving. They are electrically damped to stop them from flickering.

Plus, we are in the middle of a heat wave....

as long as it stays steady and the fan cuts in to cool it down theres no much to worry about. Mine sits at 3/4s but cools itself perfectly fine
