driverside driveshaft

  1. #1
    Hi there guys.

My saxo has been off the road for close to a year.

Well within the next month i want to get it back on the road.I have recently been checking the saxo over, getting it ready for an MOT.

Today i took the driver-side alloy off and noticed an oily texture on the inside of the alloy. I have looked at the drive shaft and the oil/grease is coming out on the hub side. Here is a picture.

Just wondered if anyone has any suggestions. Will it need a new drive shaft.? Hope not

    Thanks in advance.

The clips probably shat itself but check to see if the boot has burst.

If the boot is fine and its only just happened, take off the clip, pull back the boot and clean the joint up. Repack the boot with cv joint grease, and use a suitable jubilee clip to reattach it.

If the boots burst, youll need to remove it, get a new boot ( you can buy stretchy ones that allow you to fit without disassembling the cv joint) and fit it.

Hi there many thanks for your reply.

After a closer inspection you are infact right about the clip. Very loose. The gaiter seems absolutely fine.

So i can clean joint and repack with grease whilst the driveshaft is still on the car?

    Thanks again

Yeah should be fine. Just make sure you dont let any dirt or grit get into the joint when the boots pulled back, but if youre careful enough its no problem. If you take off the wheel, caliper and disc, itll give you way more room to work with.

Had the same problem on Monday, clip was missing. Cleaned the hub, packed the boot and put a new clip on. Clip was £3.50 from halfords, probably get them cheaper but I was in a rush.

many thanks guys. ill be sorting this out asap sometime this week.

Any of you guys know what i can use to clear rust off suspension and caliper etc. I am planning on give the car a bit of a clean up by painting some parts.

    cheers

sorry to sound thick but what grease do i need? Also how much grease do i need to put in there. Is there any guides at all anywhere.

    cheers Guys

You can get cv joint grease. Just pack it in there, but leave enough space for when the cv joint turns lock to lock.

If your not fussed with the look of the painting, why not clean up the rust etc and use something called Hammerite?
I think ill be using that myself!

This is a big killer for driveshafts. Ive lost several in the early years buying shit cheap shafts with cheap nasty clips,

Clip pops off you drive many miles without noticing and then realise when its ran dry and worn out.

Ive lost 3 alone on trackdays whith the old car

I still havent got round to doing this lol. Been a busy weeek.

Was just wondering if someone could point me to a good clip? Iv been reading up and alot of people seem to use thick cable ties.

Also how much grease is needed?

    thanks

Halfords jubilee clip will do it. I wouldn't use a cable tie. Don't think it would go tight enough.
  14. #14
I see a lot of people use cable ties, about 8mm ones...does the job but personally I prefer the clips. contact JR driveshafts they sell the clips for pennies iirc

hi guys. The other drive shaft clip has come off on the other side now. so instead of opening another thread i though id come here instead.

Ill do the same thing as i have got a spare clip, however the grease i used last time has gone so i called down to stermat earlier and picked some grease up.

The grease i purchased is carlube LM2 MULTI- PURPOSE GREASE. It says its lithium based, and it also has a high melting point.

will this stuff do the job?

    thanks

From new the black rubber CV joint gaitors are filled with a dark grey coloured high temperature " graphite " grease.
  21. #21
hmm thanks for reply. yh this grease i have is quite light in colour, i would say a light brown. it says on the tin it can be used for wheel bearings and universal joints.

not sure if i driveshaft joint comes into this.

    any more views guys.

    thanks
  22. #22
This is the stuff ive got

  23. #23
I wouldnt use the stuff above, get a proper CV grease. Its grey/black in colour
  24. #24
HI, So this stuff wont work above? hmm that was a waste of money.lol
  25. #25
    Always handy to have grease.
  26. #26
    Haha yh suppose it does.

    Thanks
  27. #27
I agree 100% with Gandi and Mick on your grease, that looks just like normal run of the mill grease but with just a slightly higher temperature to it. Not a good enough quality to risk putting into CV gaitors.
  28. #28
You want grease that has Molybdenum Disulphide in it, "moly grease" or whatever.

Halfords sell it if you like extortion.

The stuff above would do the job though, it's not as if you've lost all the grease out the joint.
