Definitely Gearbox Issue?

    Hey everyone,

    I have a 2002 VTR with 97k on it.

My Saxo has recently started knocking when the clutch bites when snatching second gear. Doesn't knock when pulling away or going through any other gear. If I am really delicate with the clutch it doesn't knock, but I'm not thrashing the clutch or revving high. It also knocks a bit when biting in 4th. You can feel the knock through the clutch and gearstick a bit too.

It's not a suspension based knock, changed everything in that department and thats all fine and dandy.

I am about to buy a new box but I want to check it would definitely be the box. Could it be a mount?

Really need some help on this one.

    Thanks

more than likely an engine or gearbox mount. Changing the lower one and the gearbox mount can be done very cheaply, i'd personally fit an uprated lower one though depending on what you use the car for

Is it easy to check the mounts for wear? What do I need to look out for?

I hope it is that as it would save me buying a new box!

play and excess movement of the engine and transmission

Ok thanks, What is a simple way of checking that?

rock it back and forth and check for movement, or look for funny angles. Take the lower mount off and check it too, anything torn or ripped in the rubber is a sure sign of a problem

I have done what you suggested. Gave it a strong, repeated rocking holding the exhaust manifold and nothing moved.

I also have had a jack under the rear gearbox mount and it began to make the chassis rise.

I could only feel the mount under the battery but the rubber felt fine all the way around.

Any other checks that could rule out the mounts?

Thanks for all the help by the way.

remove them and check manually. And check the ball joints
