Gearbox Broken?

  1. #1
    Hey guys and gals,

Sorry for the total lack of knowledge here, I'll try to be as detailed as I can

I was driving up the M40 today and the 'check engine' light came on.
Maybe 20-30 mins later (after only a slight reduction in power at 3.8-4k revs in 5th, about 90-95mph) I heard a bang / thud sound. (I can only describe the sound as a football being kicked quite hard, that sort of THUD)
I then went to change down a gear to charge lanes (going about 65 at this point) and then as I moved DOWN from 5th, it felt like the whole gearbox shifted down and to the left from under my gearstick.
I moved to the hard shoulder and shit a brick, the gearstick was now in neutral but was pointing forwards and left (towards my tax disc).
I was able to get into a gear (3rd I think), pull off and drive the rest of the way home.

I have no clue what is wrong, and have made a video to demo the problem.

Is this a clutch and gearbox combo problem, a guy at work who after a drive to the shops seems to think that I need to replace the whole spark plug and HTC lead set (I'm sure he said HTC leads, this may be wrong, sorry).

I had an MOT less than 2 months ago and the only advisories were for tires and a scuff on the front wheel.

Any help will be much appreciated

    Dan

Have you checked your linkages out of interest?

    This!

My linkages went in my 1.1 the only gears I could select were 3rd and 4th

Either the linkages or the box has dropped due to a broken gearbox mount.

    Hey guys,

Thanks for the help, massive thanks for Mark51p who did a tutorial on how to fit new gear linkages - I followed the guide and found my gear linkages to be fine - the actual issue is the small bracket which connects the OTHER end of the gear linkages to the gearbox - I was able to reconnect this to the gearbox but it just seems to 'spin' like there should be a bolt or a pin to hold this on ... off to the garage now to see if its a quick fix (as I don't have spare bolts etc to try and fix this myself)

If your check engine light comes on you might want to ease of the power a bit.

gear selecter bush is my opinion

Looks like you might be missing or have a loose roll pin

    UPDATE:

    Hey again guys,

So I have now been to several breakers yards and in the end went to the Citroen garage and ordered the pin (as detailed in the thread below).
As a quick fix, I put a cable tie through the hole and could see that this would (whilst the car is parked on my drive) stop the part from falling off, however, I still cant change any other gear apart from 3rd or 4th - the 'play' in the gearstick is now much more linear (ie the stick will move from left to right, but I cannot engage into 1st, 2nd, 5th or reverse gear).

If anyone else has any ideas, I'd love to hear them haha

the play is definitely because of the missing pin but then I'm afraid you may be looking at a dead box.

Your EML on the dash is another problem, you burned something. Fiver says cooked cat converter and wrong lambda reading though can't really tell from where I sit. I would advise for next time to use your brakes instead of hard downshifting, and ease up on the right foot.

Least the pins less than a quid to buy. If you can't get 1, 3 or 5th gear there is something stopping it engaging the gear.

I know you've checked the linkages are there, but I'd say you need to replace them as they sound too worn.

    Hey guys,

Thanks for the updates, I can still get 3rd and 4th an even when I try to rotate the bit that the linkage is attached to it wont move from the 3rd/4th gear position :/

On a side note, anyone got a vtr gearbox for sale haha - else its gonna be a breakers yard I think, or maybe just a whole new car job, whole thing was less than 600 and I could make that breaking it

Will update further once the pin comes

    Thanks again,
    Dan

Forget the pin for the moment, put a bolt through it the selector hole and then test. Might have a sloppy feeling stick but at least it'll let you get into gear

I have tried it with a cable tie ... just for testing ... and can still only select 3rd and 4th gear

ARGH! I dont know what this could be :/

I have tied a cable tie around the bracket and the linkage to see if when they move together I still am unable to change gears ... this is the result.

Does this mean that the gearbox is broken, and that I need a new one? I dont yet have the bolt, so best to wait until it arrives and go from there?

USE A BOLT, not a cable tie.
  17. #17
Have used a bolt, however I am still having the same problem ... I can only assume that the bolt is too small and that I am still just experiencing a large amount of play at the end of the gearstick.

Next plan - Get the actual Pin, then get the car on a jack / ramp and try to engage the gearbox from underneath.

Will post updates as and when - thanks for all of the help so far

Massive thank you to ALL of the people who have helped me with this issue

I think I possibly may have the same issue, but not 100% sure.

I have only done 70-80 miles since I collected the car, was driving it fine last night, parked up out the front of the house, went to move the car 5 minutes later.

Could not select 1st, only seems like 2nd and possibly 4th can be selected but no drive.

No in your expert opinions does this sound along the lines of the pin or the linkages or perhaps both.

I'm not mechanically minded, but is it something easy enough to do ??
