Problem fitting Polybushes

  1. #1
Fitted front Polybushes to my bottom arms today. Nice and easy but, when I came to refit the arms, the steel sleeves in the new bushes are too long to fit into the bracket on the shell.
The sleeves are 50mm long and there is only 48.5mm between the brackets.
Do I have to spread the brackets or shorten the sleeves? (and possibly the bushes)
    Anyone had the same problem?

I have seen others have this issue before but I'm insure what they did to resolve it. I'd presume you would want them same size as what came out?

I had this when I fitted mine other week. the sleeve itself was ok, it was the rubber bush which was a couple mm too long, so cut it off

Haha. For me it's the opposite; the Polybush without the sleeve in fits fine, so looks like I'll just have to trim a bit off the sleeves.

    noooooo

Spread the mount on the car.

It squeezes down when you tighten the bolt. this is the case on most cars

especially when we're talking 2mm here...

    OK, thanks Martin.
The old sleeves I burned out were also 48.5mm so the brackets haven't 'sprung' but, I'll give that a try before I get the grinder out.

Please don't grind the steel inserts haha.

The mount will spread. I can do it

Put the steel inserts in the freezer for 24 hours.

as said, thats strange that the sleeve is too long, my bushes were too long so chopped them down, never heard of the sleeve being too long!

It is strange. You would think it would be a straightforward job. but, I have offered up the sleeve on its own and there is no way it will go between the brackets. I verniered both and there is 1.5mm difference.
Mine are the red Polybush 'Performance' kit 91.
When assembled the sleeve is about 0.5mm longer than the bush
With just the Polybush in the arm it is a snug fit as you would expect but it does go in.
So, as Martin suggested, I have tried gently spreading the brackets this evening and the sleeve can now be tapped into place with a hammer but, haven't tried it in the arm yet.
Not too keen on moving suspension mounting points, even by small amounts.

Man up and whack fuck outta it with a hammer.

It's a suspension mounting point, it's not exactly soft metal. you're not going to break it.

I think he's more worried about alignment

    What alignment?

You're not going to knock that out by spreading the clamp.

Thing is, if the gap is 48mm, and you grind down the sleeve to 47.7. when it comes to fitting a new bush you'll grind it down to fit. eventually you'll have no clamp left.

This is why you spread the clamp in the first place.

Correct. The bracket is solid enough that I'm not worried about breaking anything and, I accept that a couple of mm shouldn't change the alignment. In fact, the shell probably flexes more than that but, everything I have read on the subject says,; don't move suspension pick-up points, even my a few mm, unless you know what it will do to the geometry.

That said, I gave Polybush a ring this afternoon and I got the impression that they thought the 50mm sleeves were wrong (should be 48mm!!) That would explain everything and fits with what Danny and Alex said about the bushes being longer!
They are checking and will ring me back so, I will keep you posted.

    Back to square one.
Had a call from Polybush this aft; they'd checked drawings and, the sleeves are, and always have been 50mm long in the Saxo/106 kit and no other reports of this problem. They suggest the same as Martin and spread the brackets on the car.
    Thanks for your input guys.
