What are the consequences of using a 740amp battery in a saxo?
Can it ruin the starter motor or alternator?

I wouldnt say the starter would be damaged,the alternator may struggle to charge the battery.

constantly trying to turn the car over will kill the starter. Not sure on that though.

Doubt it. We went to France once and our battery KOd. A family member gave us a battery out of a minibus, the thing was fucking huge and hardly fit in the engine bay. Never changed it, and did 70k in the car, so Id assume not.

only reason i ask is because ive recently had to change the starter motor and was wondering if the battery was the cause
its out of a porsche 911

Standard battery for a 1.5D for example is 600amp recommended. and it has the same charging system and starter as the petrol models. I've cranked my 1.5d over for 20 second periods before in the winter and never burnt out a motor yet.
740 will be 100% ok.
