I'm confused as to the point of this thread...are you asking for painting advice or..?

1500 is too smooth to be rubbing down with pre paint.

I then did other parts the same vents speaker covers etc etc then sprayed them with blue gloss spray I got from ebay same again light coats I did 2 coats then left to dry then sprayed them with clear laquer same again 2 coats like so

Since we're on the subject of paint, when you use lacquer how many coats? Do you sand in between? I've never sprayed and I'm thinking of doing a spare grill.
  8. #8
Why do you need them the exact colour if they're interior parts? Also before doing primer I would have personally used 240, 1500 is far to fine

I hope no one follows your way on painting, why would you leave 24 hours for the paint to dry before lacquering? Also I would expect the paint to flake off soon 1500 is a stage polish so the "key" you have given the parts is so fine the paint molecules can't stick in it so they just float on the surface.

Well they have been In the car quite some time now and they havent changed atall not a bubble or flake so I dont see the big problem everyone has different ways of doin it if u dont like the way I do It then dont comment simple

He's trying to give you advice on how to do it properly. Fact is, your paint won't stay on anywhere near as long if you key the surface with 1500.

15-20 mins flash off time mate just so the paint is slightly tacky to the touch

yes I am the expert, 13 years in the trade a full apprenticeship and the advanced craft and master painter qualifications say I am.

    You did it wrong because:-
You didn't key the part using a decent grade of paper.
You used no mention of plastic primer.
You used a gloss paint then left it 24 hours to fully cure before clear coat.
Then you clear coated without using any sort of key/scotch to give the clear coat on the fully cured paint.

Ease off on the newbie lol. Looks decent mate but as stated will eventually fall off. Bit too much for me personally but before having a go at things, have a quick search and see if someone with more experience (in this case Bedford) and it will help you from making mistakes and doing things twice

Cheers for that, I've got to flat my grill before I put the final coat on. Rain called a end to play today. If you hadn't have said I'd have just waited 24 hours.

Metal parts of any kind will need a etch primer before you start. Also depends if you use a gloss finish paint or a standard base coat. If you use a gloss then no there is no need for lacquer and if you use a base coat then yes you need to lacquer to seal it.

If you leave the paint 24 hours it cures so the next coat just sits on top so it will eventually flake and peel off. you want all the layers to become one so you let it "flash off" till tacky.

In the words of Oz "Ah Bollocks man".

Looks like I've fucked this one then, I threw down the plastic primer, let it dry then keyed it and started to put the top layers on. As you mentioned I put the first coat on then the second when it was tacky.

As I mentioned I couldn't get the third one down due to the rain as I had to get the bikes back in. So my dilemma is the second coat will be cured before I can throw the last coat and lacquer on.

    Any way to save this?

If you got one coat of lacquer on it then give it a really light scuff with something like a grey scotch brite.
