Anybody fixed their power steering pump lately?

Pump only works if you hit it with a hammer so it’s not wiring or relay etc. Just a case of dirty electric motor brushes maybe. Seems to be a common/inevitable problem with these cars & should be an easy fix with a bit of WD40. The biggest problem seems to be access as the motor end plate is not indented to be removable. It’s held on with eight splayed over lugs. Getting it off looks easy enough but it’s refitting securely that may be tricky. Has anyone done this lately? If so do you have any tips, pictures or advice? Could it be tack welded back on or would the heat kill it? I may try, as a last kill or cure resort before replacing it, drilling a small hole just big enough for a squirt of WD40 with a tube & sealing it with a self tapping screw. I know there was a link to this but last time I looked it was dead.

I had one apart and was a bit of a bastard.

Its the bushes that go on the motor so just get a new pump from a scrapped car easier and pretty cheap.

Ok. Thanks. New pumps I’ve seen cost about £250-£300 approx. & second hand £70. Problem seems inevitable with age so second hand is a bit of a punt. The cars worth about £100 & belongs to a student (my daughter) with little money. We’ve nothing to lose by taking the end plate off the motor. Any further advice, pictures or experience much appreciated. I’ll hopefully report back here with what I find.

Check the plug that is on the pump.

Mine was corroded and caused problems. Clean it up and it might work.

Has the pump properly bitten the dust... As my one was a bit temperamental up to the point i removed the vacuum pump from the engine to clean it all up and upon refitted it my power steering came back... confusing I know but maybe something you could try if not completely dead.
