Important! : Pulsing when idle?

  1. #1
My MK2 X reg vtr is pulsing when its idle, the engine isn't ticking over at steady revs?

The rev needle jumps very slightly and the car is sort of pulsing? I've checked the spark plugs, idle control valve all cleaned, and cleaned the throttle body..

    Anyone got any ideas?

Coil pack, intermittent voltage from alternator, weak fuel pressure. All things to check.

I wouldn't even know where to start

coilpack are common for going £30-40 off ebay, get OE part number from Citroën and im sure there was a supersession in them a while back from a squared off shape to a more round shaped coilpack or the other way round

were the gaps between the spark plugs all the same and at the correct spacing?

maybe even a clogged up fuel filter?

Hunting, is the term you're looking for.

A dirty icv can cause that.

Depends on how severe it is, it can be "normal" for these cars to do that, especially when cold or when battery voltage is low.

I've a mk2 coil pack going is it is that and you need one?

I have this when I turn my car on! It does it whether its cold, warm or hot or whatever but then once I touched the throttle and rev it, even if I only rev it a few hundred RPM, once it comes down again, it stays at a nice steady idle!!

It doesn't do it when its cold, but after a minute or so when the revs drop its starts to do it again.

Ahh ok fair enough! Cos mine only does it when I firs turn it on! Like I say once revved up, its fine till I turn it off and back on again!

Ah no, mine does it pretty much all the time, when i pull up at traffic lights, you can really feel it pulsing, car shakes a little bit with the revs bouncing, its annoying more than anything!

I think i may replace the idle control valve first
  11. #11
I'd replace the ICV, cheapest and easiest to replace.

I pulled mine out and it wasn't that bad, it looked fairly clean and not worn down? But i guess there is no real way of telling if it needs replacing, recon its worth getting one from the scrappy first?

Im not sure what to try first, idle control valve or coil pack, any ideas?

I've been having this myself (I've got a 2001 Furio). Revs bounce up and down, usually at traffic lights, to be honest I never stay stationary on my driveway long enough to notice it there. Mine 'failed' the MOT on the emissions though (within the last few weeks), mechanic reckoned it may well be the plugs/coil pack needs replacing, but also could have been a partial block in the exhaust system? Fishing for work there maybe. But yeah, my first call was going to be coil pack and plugs but I haven't got round to it yet either.

Do you have a print out of the emissions results?

Could be a faulty throttle body mine dose it as well it's known as hunting

You can get them new for about £12 so it's not worth getting a second hand one.

A brand new ICV for £12? Please link me, cheapest i've seen is £38... Ones on ebay for £25 are supposedly rubbish

Here is a video of the hiss coming for the car on revs and idle
  21. #21
That video is 100% normal sounds. ICV's hiss and so does the throttle when you open it in the way you did.

Sounds a bit diesel though, get those tappets set before you do anything. if they are not all equally set or correctly gapped that could potentially give you high emissions because there won't be enough air getting into the engine.

Doesn't do it when cold, it could be lambda sensor?

Yes the ebay sensors are shit, last 12 months if you're lucky. false economy. Not just with peugeot parts, I've had problems with my Jeep ZJ and Vectra as well with them.

Edit unplug the lambda sensor (or both if you have two) and drive the car for a while. if the problem stops then you've found it!

If i unplug the lamba sensor and give it a drive the engine management light is going to come on isn't it?

Not to sure what you mean by tappets? No idea what they even are... my old saxo never made this noise on revs that's all...

Yes the EML will light. but when you plug it back in the light will go off. At least mine went out anyway when I replaced a bad sensor.

tappets: see this link here http://106owners.co.uk/forums/showth...Clearances-(8v)

If you're not handy with a spanner, get someone else to do it.

Don't let them rip you off, no more than an hours work for that.

Im heading down to the scrappy tomorrow to pick up an airbox so ill grab a ICV and replace it with my one to see if that sorts the poor idling out. If not, then ill give it a go and contact my garage (Family friend) so hopfully wouldnt rip me off
