Important! : I've been an idiot - Now possible air leak??

  1. #1
I was trying to clan my ICV today and managed to snap the breather pipe out the air box. Will this affect the running of the car if its hanging off? The tread is still inside the air box so if i replace im going to need a new air box too, thinking of buying an induction kit because i believe you wont need the brether pipe then?

Also i did manage to clean my ICV but the car is still hunting whilst idle, and can hear a intermittent hissing noise coming from around the area the ICV is located, when it hisses the car revs drop and rise very quickly causing a small judder...

Any help would be much appreciated!

I'd imagine the hissing would be coming from the location of the snapped breather?

Here is a pic of what i've done

I don't think it's a major problem running it without it tbh other than oil getting over your engine. If I'm right the breather is only there to feed oil coming back up the intake into the head.

This was my understanding too, I think i will tape it for the moment and order a enclosed induction kit in the mean time, because to replace this i will need a new airbox and everything.

Should be fine mate, be careful with tape as you don't want it getting sucked into the engine. Wrap it around the whole pipe.

It does sound like air being pushed through a hole, everytime i rev the engine you can hear a small hiss when its first reved, comes from around the ICV area. Any idea what it could be?

The breather doesnt direct oil from the inlet back into the head. As its name suggests it allows the crankcase to breathe. Your engine oil expands and contracts too through its heat cycles.so it is filtered to stop shite getti g drawn into the cam cover as it cools.and creates a vacuum.
You need to bung the hole in the airbox as best as possible, and dont bung the breather pipe up though. Itl cause issues. Just whack a bit of cloth over its end and secure with a elastic band.

Might just go down to the scrappy tomorrow and see if I can pick up a airbox and breather pipe, for future reference how do you disconnect the breather from the airbox, as tugging it as hard as possible obviously isn't the solution lol

push the yellow button in fully and give it a wiggle......

Just so you know, theres not alot on a sax that wont break if you just yank it....

Do you see many saxos in the scrappy nowdays?

The yellow button had no give in it at all.

And actually I went to the scrappy today for the first time in about 6 months, and there was only 2 Saxo's there, last time i went they had about 10, others have said they have seen less as well..

It was probably perished before you snapped it. Honestly I would buy new meaning your new part doesn't come with second hand oil gunk inside.

I've just rung the scrappy and they have a silver VTR in at the moment so I will go over there first thing tomorrow morning, ill get my girlfriend to take me to avoid any oil spluttering anywhere in the mean time.

So I have the airbox and breather pipe sorted, now im turning to the idle issue, after cleaning the ICV it has calmed down and bit and isn't idling to ruff now, however you can still hear the hiss on revs, video below:

Can't exactly work out were the hiss is coming from, it ether from the ICV or the black box to the left of it; I have no idea what that is.

Picked up a new air box from the scrappy today, cost me £10 with all the pipes and new breather hose! Not bad i thought.

Before i swapped it over, I took the new box apart and jet washed off all the parts, and then back to blacked the lot of it, look like its brand new. Replaced it all now and it run lovely!

Whilst i was at the scrappy i picked up a ICV, when i cleaned it off and swapped it over with my original ICV, the car just reved at 2500rpm, i tried re calebrating by switching the ignition 7 times but no luck, so I am back to the old ICV now, engine is still hunting
