worked out my car is getting around 30mpg on a 2000 furio

thats driving sensibly and giving it some now and again.

my mates vtr does the same trips and hes using alot less petrol

any ideas on how i could improve this? or problems causing it?

i have a open filter if that effects it, im going to go standard tomoz to find out.

    thanks.

are you doing short trips where the engine doesnt spend very much time at it's designed operating temperature? what type of driving do you do? town? country? motorway?

    tyre pressures?

    open filter wont help matters
when was your car last serviced?

    Are you towing a carvan?

    Few things to do:

Check the cars servicing is all upto date...
Infate the tyres to what they should be
Take out extra weight that you don't need..
Stick to the speed limits and gradually get there, dont redline it then slow down. Also keep the revs down, but make sure they aren't so low that you're labouring the engine...

And probably the best tip...anticipate the traffic, eg avoid breaking you don't have to, slowly drive upto the lights if you see they are red, don't speed up and then brake. etc etc!

Hope this helps, all i can think of now as its so late lol

ye i drive normally at 40mph most of the time, i think it needs servicing in about 3k and normally im driving in all conditions most of the time, tho my car seems to be very good on motorways rather than street driving.
and its always at the temp it shud be as i dont leave it off for long.

i also put it in neutral alot if i know i have to stop for lights, so i coast upto lights almost everytime to help it but its still bad..

where i give it crap or drive alright all night it uses the same amount, i think i got 75ish miles to £10 on tuesday nite and thats at 92.2p

Open filter is probably causing it to drop a fair bit. mine does 40mph usually driving sensibly. when i had an open filter on it it dropped to 32mpg and thats just on a 1.0

coating is bad. wen u are in gear using engine breakin u use no fuel at all.

my vtr does bout 280-300 off 30 quid and i drive like a tit all the time, i used to get less with an open filter so i went back to standard airbox and pannel filter and it improved, give it a go

i have a full zorst system no box's and 2" bore pipe also, but that probs makes fuel consumption worse lol

    Think you mean coasting?
And tbh if your not accelerating your not using fuel? So i doubt that makes any diffrence.

I brake by using the gears too..

In my furio for a full tank £30-£32 i get about 300-350 mile depending on what type of driving ive been doing. Is this average? Last week i got 360 but i did motorway driving. Usually about 300 miles a tank!

In my VTR i get 340 miles average to a tank £33 - £35 quid. thats mostly motorway (110 mile round trip a day to work)

If the engine is idling then you are using fuel, where as if you are engine breaking the wheels are turning the engine therefore your not using any fuel.

30mpg sounds about right for town driving if thats what you do, i get 70 miles to £10 in my vtr

Last week on my mk1 vtr i got 247 miles for a tank lol! that was me booting the shit out of it with open filter, 4-2-1 manifold decat and magnex cat backsystem.... no driving like that all the time cant afford it!

ah, i didnt realise that coasting uses more petrol than engine braking

    i got 80ish miles to £10 at 91.9p

ill put my normal filter back on and try doing no coasting to see if that helps

ill report back on the results

Put standard air box on, thats one of main reasons.

    Start Engine Braking
    No harsh starts

My VTR is getting 39.7MPG around town and about 120 miles for £10.

    almost correct...

engine breaking does use fuel, but much less than coasting.

The main thing that uses fuel is throttle possition, not reving. Try to avoid using full throttle, it'll improve by miles

I written shed loads on how to save fuel in the past

    might be of some use.

my vtr used to 100 miles to 10 quid if i was giving it some, and 120 if being nice, used to do 450 miles to a tank and if i seen below 400 i was annoyed, best result was 472 miles to the tank then bottled it. I put it more down to how well looked after the car was i serviced it ever 300 miles never booting from cold etc etc

just out of interest scott, what sort of engine mods were you running (if any)?
  21. #21
only magnex cat back and and decat because the cat blew up when the coil pack went once
