PAS pump troubles... Again.

    Right,

I've just got in from changing the PAS loom. As I thought this was the problem with it.

I previously changed the pump but it was hit and miss whether it would work or not, as I had to get out and push the cable together quite hard (PAS loom to pump plug)

After a while I was getting smoke coming from the plug and it hasn't worked since.

    Have I fried the pump?

    Any advice appreciated as always.

    Cheers.

may have shorted it out if there is smoke coming from it :/

Have you got a decent earth?

That's what I was thinking, but fuses would have blown if that was the case?

Yeah I've just replaced the PAS loom and that replaces the earth as well.

Maybe wrong fuse in box or somewhere along line causing a fault. have you looked at the whole loom and done inspection on it to see if its causing a short anywhere?

It was working just after I changed the pump then eventually stopped.

I've just changed the PAS loom today and I'm sure that's all fine?

How would I check it with a multimeter?

What part was the smoke coming from ?

The plug mate, loom to pas pump with the red slide up clip.

First of check fuse box and make sure none are blown and correct amp for them.

Next make sure they are also clean including the connector that the pump goes to.

Check the connection with your meter set to continuity mode if it got one on it that makes beep when both ends are touched together.

Now if you got thin wires on end of it or if rods on it hold one of the rods on the negative and same for positive.

Then repeat with the actual connector not the pump do for all testing each one out.

    Test pump too separate

Maybe also a bad earth too.

Simplest thing I can advise if you know how to is take the wiring out and then test it all bit by bit and check it.

I am no expert in this filed as am learning too. Maybe theirs someone else who can help with this too.

Having a good look around for you as I know how frustrating this can be.

My guess is that the brushes in the pas pump have jammed & made the circuit overload causing the smoke.

I bought the loom from spoox Motorsport, and it was in working condition. All connections are good, a lot better than my old ones.

So it's a new loom. So no idea what's happening?

I have the new loom all connected up and there's no smoke or anything. I've tried hitting it with a hammer and still nothing.

I might take the earth out and clean it, see if that helps.

Is there fuses in the engine fuse box that power the pump?

I thought it was only the one in the car that also does blowers and demister?

Anything I can do if it's jammed?

As I say It was working for a while but I had to keep plugging the plug back in as I'd cut the slide clip off the old loom. Then It started smoking after a couple of weeks of reconnecting it (smoke normally means overheating due to a bad connection, the old loom plug is corroded to bits.) so I've changed the PAS loom and all the connections seem fine.

Ill have to get a multimeter to check the loom from the car to see if it's actually supplying power...

My Power Steering has completely died today on my 2001 VTR, ive checked the fluid it has plenty in it. It used to come on but just howl like mad but now I get no power steering what so ever
Could it just be the relay?
Will I need to replace the whole pump?
    Thanks guys

A temporary fix is to start the car then give the metal part of the pas pump a tap with a hammer. Are your heater blowers & rear demister working?

Wanting a solid fix as its MOT is due in October
Yeah they all work fine with no problems at all, its just the power steering

Well go for the cheapest thing 1st & replace the relay £5.00(used on ebay)if that doesn`t work then replace the pump.

Tested the relay etc today and it is the pump
So need to find a replacement pump at some point, kinda gutted but oh well these things happen!
