sqeaking gear stick

  1. #1
    Hi,

I have a Saxo vts 16v V reg. The gear stick squeaks when hot, like a plastic sound. I then changed the clutch full kit and the gear stick and ball thinking this would solve the problem, but the problem persists

Any ideas or advice would be most welcomed

    Thanks

I'd take it out again, clean and regrease then. I know it sounds like a pain, though not as much a pain of having a squeaky gear stick... The joys of saxo ownership, chasing the squeaks and rattle.

    no no

grease the nylon ball under the gaiter at the base of the gear stick itself. that is what squeaks, most common.

    Ahh I never spotted that!

You need to find exactly where the squeak is coming from, you need to get the car on ramps or axle stands, and have a mate wiggle the gearstick until you find the source.

Don`t forget everything expands when hot,so the noise maybe the gear linkages under the car rubbing on something?

Could be a heatshield, best off taking it for a run,get it back home & jacked up whilst its still hot & check.

I checked the heat shield and moved it away from gear linkages and saw the foil or whatever its called on the shield is well worn but still intact, i also sprayed DW40 on ball of gear stick.

took car for a run and soon as i started to change gear the squeaking sound still there

any ideas dudes ??? fed up of this now

Did you get a friend to come around and play with the knob to see where the squeaking is coming from???? (while you are under the car)

Do that before you do anything else, if you haven't. I can guarantee you'll find where it's coming from that way.

hahaha I think I may know what it is. Go have a look at the fitting kit between the catalytic converter and middle pipe (2 springs with 13mm bolts). Had that one before, would squeak every time you engage/disengage the clutch. Tighten up a notch.

    Those springs:

I had this, changed the nylon bush right at the end of the gear stick (under the car). Been fine since.
