Important! : Gearbox whining - 1st gear on the downchange

  1. #1
    Hi
Car is a saxo VTR 2002
    Gearbox is original one
When I'm driving, say 4th gear, as I'm pulling up to a stop I would put the clutch in and move the gear stick to select 1st
This is when I hear a loud whirring noise like one of the shafts is spinning faster than it should
Doesn't happen for any other gear
But can hear it going from neutral to 1st only slightly
Sort of a whirring sound that speeds up somewhere
    Any ideas anyone?
    Get a new box?
Get a new clutch - unlikely as it doesn't seem to be slipping/causing problems!
    Something else?

No idea what this was - decided to get a clutch kit and change it all - will see of this sorts it - might just have been a knackered release bearing!

Ive got a slow gearbox leak on mine and I hadnt kept an eye on it.
Mine done exactly the same when changing down to first.
Topped up the level and all is good

Had done a full gearbox oil change but noise was still there - attributed it to the release bearing
    Will see when it's back!
