Car keeps blowing crank sensor!

  1. #1
Hi all, my car cut out on my drive and RAC came out to have a look, the guy pulls out the crank sensor as its not giving out a reading and it looks like this!!

Fitted a new one today, car starts fine, ran on idle for about 10 minutes, pulled off drive revved up to 3-4k as driving off and it popped again!

RAC think its something inside gearbox catching it or electrical fault possibly??? I dont know where to start!

    Thanks in advance

yes it's physical damage. it's either being allowed to go in too far or something internally is hitting it. Needs urgently addressing.

Shouldn`t there be a plastic spacer plate that goes on 1st,followed by the crank sensor?

Im not sure? Ive read alot of posts about clearance issues causing this issue but the original sensor had been on the car 2 years before this happened hmmm

so its somehow hitting the flywheel if its doing that

    never seen that before

Could something become loose or trapped in there and hit it?

I had this fault on my range rover about a month ago. As I replaced the starter motor I bumped the sensor without realising. Cranking it over killed the sensor. Easily done. On saxos, it's a little harder as the bracket isn't adjustable but I guess it's still possible. You'd have to think perhaps part of the clutch is catching it or something, but I don't see how. Only way to really know is to remove the box I'm afraid.

or pull the sensor off and turn the engine over by hand (plugs out helps)

Still not made time to fix this yet anyhow heres a pic of the clutch

There is something broken off if you look carefully so id get the box off and youll prob find. The outer casing or something has broken away

there is something stuck on your flywheel. you can see where it's been hitting the inside of the casing there.

Rotate the engine by hand while looking in that hole, and remove whatever is in there.

If it's a piece of clutch, then it's box off

I had this very same problem with a Saxo vts I bought. It came to me with a slight gearbox whine then one day driving it out the workshop it just cut out and wouldn't restart. Turned out the diff had failed cracking the gearbox casing inside the bell housing and a couple of fragments had gone round the flywheel and mullered the crank sensor.

I know what the problem is - by the looks of that picture, your crank sensor is packed with my pubes lol

I`m not sure about all saxo`s but on mine there is a plastic spacer that goes on 1st followed by the sensor. At a guess the spacer stops the sensor from being fouled,to the op check this out.

Mine hasnt got a spacer mate, its more than likely something to do with the blatant piece of twisted metal sticking out of my clutch! See pic!

Your clutch has shit itself or somthing my clutch did simulate but the car was vibrating loads and your could hear somthing not right inside the car when driving one of the pressure plate outer spring plates had sheered off causing fragments to hit my crank sensor sup risked you haven't felt anything out of the ordinary as your driving it as on mine it threw somthing out of balance causing the car to vibrate severely at around 3000 rpm+
