MOT advisories advice

  1. #1
Passed the MOT today but had a couple of advisories: the list is as follows,

    Rear Brake pads wearing thin

Front (both) Macpherson strut has slight movement at the upper attachment

Near side front anti-roll bar linkage damaged but not seriously weakened

The tester did say that the metal clips holding a rubber were away that keeps grease in and to get that checked. Is this CV? Also the near side front tyre is fouling the bodywork. Would this be linked to the ARB? Just looking for some advice on difficulty in rectifying these issues etc.

    Cheers for any help

    New rear pads (obviously)

New drop links (about £20, I'd do both together)

You can use jubilee clips on the cv joint rubbers after you re-pack it with grease, hopefully you'll save them in time. If not it's new driveshafts (£60 for the pair).

Sounds like you'll need new top mounts on your struts, this could be why your tyre is rubbing the bodywork.

Any way of knowing about the driveshafts? What are the drop links for? And the anti roll bar, does this mean new wishbones?

Not sure if the "upper attachment" means drop links or topmounts

I've just used cable ties on the ends of the cv boots haha

Put the steering on full lock, that way the cv joint gaiters are stretched & you`ll see if theres a split in the rubber.

Drop link connects the anti roll bar to the strut, nothing to do with the wishbones. Easy to change, two bolts and there off unless the nut has ceased and you have to cut them off.

I'd say just repack the driveshaft cv boots with grease and get a jubilee clip on them, a pair of clips is about £4 just see how they go, however if it is your top mounts then you'll need to take the struts off anyway so you may as well replace the shafts.

Thanks for all the help guys. To take the strut off is it a case of spring compressors etc? As you can tell I've only done a few jobs myself, changing oil, back box etc but nothing that big. Any particular grease or is it specific? When the car is stationary and I turn the wheel there is clunking so I take it the droplinks/top mount bearings would fix this? Sorry for all the questions and once again thanks for the advice

    In a nut shell.

To take the strut off you need to undo the driveshaft nut (have someone step on the brakes to do it and take both sides off one after another), undo the drop link and track rod end from the strut. Take off the caliper (don't let it hang as you'll stretch the hose). Undo the pinch bolt holding the wishbone to the strut (I find it easier to remove the wishbone completely) and separate the ball joint.

Pull the strut away from the driveshaft but don't let the driveshaft come away from the box and don't let it hang or you'll piss gearbox oil everywhere.

Undo the three top mount bolts and it'll drop away (have someone hold the strut so it doesn't hit the ground).

To take the top mounts off you'll need to compress the springs and undo the top nut. Remove the mount and put the new one on.

    Then reassemble.

If your going to repack your cv boot, you'll need cv grease about a fiver a tub.

Here's a pic of when I done mine, I used a bungee to hold the drive shaft and put the calliper on a upturned bucket. You can see the jubilee clip on the end of the cv boot.

Yet again that's so much for the help mate. Gonna go for the grease, top mounts and drop links and then see over time if the driveshafts need done. Now to go and find that key for the locking wheel nuts. Can't remember getting one when I bought it so that will be a job in itself! When I get round to it I will put some pics up. Murder the now with uni etc.

I've got two driveshafts, a clutch and new shocks to go on but I can't find the time.

It's always the same mate. I have a backbox and mirrors sitting in the house and now there will be more!
