Undersealing/Waxoyl. Which is best? Any tips for prep etc?

So I have a V plate VTR and I'm figuring now is the time to tackle the underside of the car. Has anyone undertaken a job like this and which product is best for it? What sort of prep did you do?

Scrap all rust off, wipe with white spirit. Dry and get painting/spraying.

Ok, sounds quite labour intensive! What would you use to get all the old stuff/rust out of it?

wire brush attachment on a drill or a flap disk

Did on my old saxo with some dinitrol (spelling) they did kits on the rejel website. Was really pleased with the products and seemed to do the job. Have a look at built hammer/waxoyl/dinitrol on classic car forums and make your own mind up.

Cool thanks for that. What do you reckon it'll take time wise? A full day?

It really depends on how thorough you are & what kind of working conditions you have mate, don`t forget to removed the spare wheel & treat the area above etc.

Well it'll be on the drive up on stands I reckon so maybe best to wait until spring so I don't risk trapping any moisture between the chassis and the rustproofing.

Dunno if its helpfull but I wanted to protect the arches of the sax.
    1) jet washed and wire brushed
    2) Cleaned with white sprits
    3) left it to dry out
    4) Brushed on a few thick coats of POR15
    5) done a few coats of red hammerite

Was pleased with the overall results. Por15 is amazing stuff but destroys paint brushes and clothes. Defo wear gloves its a bastard to get off

I just used some waxoyl on the rear of mine and il be doing the arches too, I just used a kitchen scrub brush to get the worst of the dirt off and painted the waxoyl on, from what ive heard its pretty good but really expensive too

The man speaks sense! Better taking the time to scrub it all down and paint it

Been meaning to do this myself!
I originally planned to scrape off all the surface rust /dirt then use jenolite
and then waxoyl, but now it seems everyone just paints it so think I will just get some black Hammerite or a similar metal paint

I used waxoyl, I didn't want to use it but I didn't have the time to spray it up. Still I'm not arsed as it's rest treated and sealed. Not as if I have to look at it all the time.

Painting it is all well and good, but surely you need to add anti stone chip goo over the top anyway?

I used hammerite on my old vtr, only problem with it is that it flakes off after sometime. Think i ended up using the spray on stuff tetrosyl think its called. What i did for prep was wire brush the shit out of it then i put some kurust rust remover on it. Brushed all that off then put anti rust primer on it then the tetrosyl. Seemed to keep the rust at bay. Luckily i found a really clean 53 reg vtr, underside of the car is like new still, slight bit of surface rust on inner arches so be doin it again soon.

Doing mine next month as I took the spare off and need to replace the bolt hook that holds the wheel in place and it was quite orange! I think the car has been kept near the seaside.. Ill be getting it on the axle stands and a good wire brush to remove any surface rust then a good few coats of tetrosyl tetra schutz through the airgun should solve it.. arches and front end of the car look pretty clean.
