Help! Whats this?

    Hi guys, see photo.

Sorry, haven't a clue with cars (learner driver) but was driving along tonight and suddenly after shifting down from 4th the 3rd I noticed the car start making a racket. Assumed it was the exhaust. Stopped the car and popped the bonnet and noticed this dangling under the car. Obviously looks likes its came out the hold (on the exhaust I assume?), but what is it and is this a minor or bigger issue to fix?

    Thanks in advance

Cheers mate had just send the picture to a friend of mine who's a mechanic. He said the same thing and that it'll need a new downpipe as it looks likes its rotted where it screws in and has blown out. Haven't heard back any further when I queried on cost, hopefully shouldn't be too expensive?

Should be able to pick one up from a scrapyard for pennies (well £5-10 or so), the wanted section on the forum here, or even a new one for about £35-40 I'd say.

Cheers guys that's kind of a relief. Hopefully shouldn't be too much cost/hassle to sort out. Seeing as I have my test this Friday I could have done without it though!

By the way, if I were to keep driving around with it like that, apart from the racket it makes, will it just eat up more juice or do further damage elsewhere?

it might put your engine light on and could risk damaging your catalytic converter if its overfueling

Did you not hear your car suddenly grow a huge backbox when that blew out? It must have sounded crazy with the huge hole in it

Take it to a garage and see if they can weld it.
We had to do it on a 106 cause the person didn't want to buy and new one.
Sensor was fine as long as you don't put too much heat into it.

Just don`t buy a generic cheapy lambda sensor of ebay whatever you do mate.

if you could separate that lambda sensor from the old bit of metal you can probably reuse it and just get a new downpipe

Yeah my friend said the same thing. I think he's coming to have a look at it tonight or tomorrow. If it needs both then so be it, obviously better if its just the downpipe.
