rumbling/grinding when driving?

not a saxo but got a problem with the gti.
basically when i have to pick up speed quickly either pulling out onto a backroad from a junction, joining motorway etc or just having a fun drive it will be fine in gears 1 and 2 but if im driving quickly in 3rd/4th/5th the car will feel as if im driving over a rumble strip it just vibrates and feels as if something is grinding.
if i take my foot off the accelerator it stops, then i put my foot back on and it starts doing it again!

had a few ideas going through my head, maybe gearbox? engine mounts? also my supersprint manifold looks quite close to my gearbox so dunno if it would move enough to rub against it?

    sorry for the essay!

Rumbling is usually a wheel bearing but your saying it goes when your off the power, if it was a wheel bearing then it would be there all the time. Is the sound coming from a particular side? Could be a driveshaft under load? Don't think it would be a mount as it would vibrate through the car rather than how your saying.

it feels as if its coming from underneath the car, could the gearbox be low on oil or should i take it to a garage and get them to have a look over it although i'd imagine i have to take them out as its hard to explain :/
at first i thought it was the exhaust vibrating and rattling underneath as thats what it feels like but that all looks fine
