worrying noise from o/s/f area! lots of detail inside, shaft or wheel bearing?

    Hey guys.

Well this has just started 2days ago but seems to be geting worse!

It only happens when the car is in motion.

First it started as a squeek/whistle which appeard to go away get quietr when turning, now its started making a loud grinding noise!

Its on/off like something is rubbing on 1/4 of the wheel only, if that makes sense, and the noise gets faster/slower depending on speed.

Ive had the wheel off and nothing is loose or fouling it..

Also this grinding noise only comes on when the car is NOT under load, only when i let off the gas or dip the clutch, if i take the clutch up to the bite point again it goes away :/

Its 100% coming from the drivers side front and you can hear it very clearly even with the windows up!

Any ideas? I will be going to a garage soon but want an idea of what it could be first.

    Thanks,

    Karl.

Wheel bearing maybe. Where about in the town are you?

I thought that but ive had a wheel bearing go before and its like a constant groan noise.

This is quite bad and has come on very quickly.

    Im in north sheilds pal.

    Shaft/wheel bearing/disc catching?

I said you'd regret buying a Saxo Karl

They never leave you alone and are never settled lol

Haha i dont regret it, i like the challenge

not the disc as brakeing makes no diff and i checked that when i took the wheel off.

Thinking either the shaft or bearing, got to be something moving ha.

I know when i went to view the car the C.V boot had come of and was grease allover but it was put back on when it had an MOT as it was just the jubilee clip.

Depends how long the cv had been running without grease in it. Might have caused enough damage before it was sorted out and now it's decided to say fuck you.

Well it was off the road for a year before i bought it.

Would it be adviseable to maybe take it off regrease it etc?

Never took a CV boot off before, dont even know what they like inside!

have you checked the bearing for play and also spun the wheel to see if there is any rough noise coming from it? I had a wheel bearing dry up inside it had no play just the noise that slowly got worse.

I have not, although i did spin the disc with the wheel off and was no noise.

Im thinking now its either the wheel bearing or shaft and im leaning towards the shaft tbh.

Btw John, where is a new shaft £26?

I havent seen less than £70..
  13. #13
J&R Driveshafts, cheap and good quality IMO.
  14. #14
Is that online or ir it a business near by?
  15. #15
Online, just google J&R. They sell on eBay as well, there that cheap if your doing one you may as well do the other side since you'll be dropping the box oil. Save on postage as well etc etc.

    Thanks mate!

Will take a look, could i not just replace the end as the shaft itself is ok.
  17. #17
It's not worth the hasstle, you can but for the parts, time and effort you may as well get a new shaft.
  18. #18
Im just trying to think of the cheapest repair tbh taking into account a garage will be doing it.

Driveshaft is piss to do yourself, it doesn't take very long. I'd rather save the £40 and do it myself.

Bare in mind it took me 3hours to do the PAS pipe haha
