Important! : Quick question on gearbox for tomorrow

  1. #1
Hi quick question, going to buy a replacement gearbox tomorrow, the gearbox currently in my car is the original and has gone faulty. The code is 20CE81. When i rang my local scrap yard he asked for my car reg, age, make and model and went onto their database for parts. They said they had three in, when i asked them if any of the three had the same gearbox code they said it doesn't matter as they match the parts up with the correct make, model year and litre type. Im a bit concerned as i dont want to buy a different coded one to find when fitting or driving it either doesn't work or is not compatible with my vehicle.

Could someone inform me is this is ok or not? i could also read the gearbox code when i get their but may not need to.

    Thanks

All saxo gearboxes will physically fit but if you want a like for like replacement (to keep the gearing you're used to) then any from the same year and model will be absolutely fine

Thanks for this Ross so any they show me will work, this might sound stupid now but by not having a like for like box what would i expect to change? longer or shorter time to shift?

Also when looking at them is their anything i can look for to determine if the gearbox is a good working replacement or not?

    Thanks

The gearing might be different - so higher top speed in each gear but worse acceleration. Or other way round etc.

Ideally if you're not doing it intentionally to do such a thing, stick with a box from the same model car - so a 1.1 box on a 1.1, or Vtr box on a Vtr etc.

understand now thanks Ross went down this morning and he put my details into their parts database, 1.1, 2000, saxo. The box im getting is from a 2001 and he said the box bought is fine for my car. Paid £75 for it comes with a 1 month warranty and has been cleaned checked and stored away. He said they will do a final check before handing it over. Going to collect it later today.

Ok got gearbox thought id shed some light. Overall condition good joints are rusted as expected. Felt for play on the spline inside the gearbox and all linkages and they operate good no loose or play in them. Iv'e never seen a gearbox out on its own but bloody hell its small!! heavy though. Got the clutch kit today to the Valco one and after checking the part their was no grease supplied. So bought this stuff.

Will this work just the same?

And as far as lowering and raising the gearbox what the best way to support the weight when working mainly on my own?

And lastly the gearbox code of mine is: 20CE81 and the new one is 20CF03 couldnt see the code on the site is this from a 1.1?

    Thanks

Change the shaft seals while it's out you'd be silly not to. Check for place on the selector too

Were is the shaft seal? and checked all linkages and leavers and all fine with no sign of play. as for the grease compound i bought can i use this on the spline of the gearbox and in the ring of the release bearing?

    Thanks

Also when looking at the box, on the picture below were the drivers driveshaft foes into the gearbox, the white plug above is snapped clean off. Can i pop it out and take mine of my gearbox and swap them over?

I personally use a bit of copper grease on the splines but not too much, you don't want to contaminate the clutch so really thick grease might be a bad idea. By shaft seals I meant driveshaft seals, cheap to buy and easy to prize out and push the new ones in. Will be nothing worse than getting it fitted and filled with oil then finding a leak from one where the shafts engage the diff

Copper grease as above is ideal. Just a tiny dab mind you.

    20CF03 is a 1.1 box yep.

Swapping your sensor is fine too.

Brilliant ok will see if i can order some new drive shaft seals in time for Saturday. As for the Carlube LM2 i just bought is this ok to use still, if not then i do have some copper grease lying around.

Last thing this is a separate issue though. This fault could in fact be down to the gearbox still but just in case it isnt:

When applying the break from say like 20 to 0 or coming to a stop as the wheels turn their is a clunking noise from both wheels. When listing off the break pedal it goes away. And sometimes it sounds like it clunks once or twice from the back but this could be vibration through the chassis. Its only came on since the gearbox got dramatically worse. What could it be?

    Thanks
