Alternator again????

    Hi had a new alternator fitted a week ago today after the RAC advised that was why my car wasn't starting and this morning on the way in to work my power steering has died, I have no heating and my heated rear screen doesn't work. Car starts fine, leccy windows ok, stereo works.

    Alternator again? battery? or something else?

    check all fuses to begin with.

    After checking the fuses if they`re ok,then do the fix theres a guide for it on here mate.

    It's a simple fix but involves playing with wires under your steering column.

    sounds like alternator... I have done 8 this year!!!! everytime, heating goes, rear demister goes, power steering goes. I don't care what people say about playing with wires under the steering column, if the alternator has gone, you need a new one, eventually car will die, and jumping it wont help you at all.

    Seems a bit strange that the alternator would fail again so soon.

    Best rule that out first though but testing the voltage output from the alternator by testing the charge rate at the battery using a multimeter.

    The reading you should get with the car idling will be roughly 14 volts or so.

    If you get this the alternator is good.

    Was this a brand new alternator you had fitted a week ago? (or one from the scrappy?) If it's brand new, then I'd seek a refund/replacement if it is faulty. Surely there's some sort of warranty with it?

    I have 2 x burnt out wires behind my fuse box apparently

    Patch them up mate.
    Cut the burned bits off, join them back together, heat shrink them and then wrap some tape around. Job Done.

    Do that and see if it does it again.
