gearbox/selecting gears....HELPPPPPP

  1. #1
Will try and explain the best i can from the beginning. here goes:

Took my vtr off the road 3 weeks ago due to breaking the gearbox, while it has been off the road iv fitted FMIC, turbo kit, another gearbox, a used clutch release bearing, a new drivers side driveshaft, fresh engine and gearbox oil. Once it got all built back up, started engineand check everything works the way it did before coming off the road.....it didn't, i couldn't get it to select any gear while engine was running, trying to select reverse grinded (engine off, popped into any gear).

Took gearbox back off (sigh), replaced used release bearing for a brand new unit, fitted it, checked that the prongs on the pressure plate were ok.....they are. This is where it starts to get weird.....while i was building it up (had no passenger driveshaft in at the time and front wheel was off the floor) i connected the battery, started car up and i COULD select any gear including reverse with no grinding or anything. Carried on building it all back up....all 4 wheels on the floor, gearbox oil in, started car to go and select a gear and the damn thing wouldn't go in does the same thing with reverse....grinds.

I jacked car up so both front wheels were off the floor, started car up i could select any gear i wanted.....little jumpy but they slotted in. But what i noticed is while i had clutch pressed all way down to the floor, the wheels were still spinning.....give it a rev and wheels got faster, pressed brake pedal and it sounded like something is still spinning causing it to grind/rub.
When selecting a gear whether i had foot on clutch or not, i only had to move the gear stick a matter of millimeters and wheels would start spinning again.

Iv included a video to see if any of you guys have the foggiest idea what the hell is going on. Surprised Gav and Boony haven't told me f&*k off yet with the amount of txt messages and phone calls they keep getting off me lol.

Sorry it's a little long, but i need answers as to what it is/can be.

(car doesn't sound that rough in person lol)

Initially seems like a problem with the clutch, either not releasing or not adjusted properly.

Only thing i changed was release bearing, didn't touch the clutch as it's only 4000 miles old (not a cheapo one either). Doesn't matter if the cable is where it was originally or done up to the max....it still wont select gears while engine is running.

Got a couple of things to try later, so will update when iv finished.

    Anyone?

A diff problem maybe? Drop the shafts and check if it still happens

Are you sure this box is a good one? If that's the only constant part that's not been swapped since the problem happened

Box came from a fully working car. I trust boony 100% he's not the kind of person to sell a dodgy item.

Dropped passenger shaft, started car up, diff stays still when in neutral and obviously moves when in gear, press brakes....no noise. (pop shaft back in and it makes the noise again)
with engine off, spin drivers wheel (with both shafts in) passenger stays still, spin passenger side and drivers side moves.

Had a local mechanic look at it and he reckons either a bit of the clutch friction plate has chipped away when removing the box (at an angle) or could be diff as the noise is coming from that area.
cant get drivers shaft off, nuts for bearing carrier.....9mm too small, 10mm too bloody big and a pain in the damn arse to remove the 3 bolts on the actual carrier

    What do you guys think?

(if its not done by the weekend, it will get stripped and i'll just buy a different shit saxo which works)

UPDATE: for anyone else who ever has the problem i did.....change the clutch!!!

Even though the clutch plate still had some beef left on, 1 of the 4 springs had popped out and started getting lodged between clutch and pressure plate causing it to get rather hot (spring has changed colour) and has a very worn down spot (the grinding i could hear).
Brand new clutch has been fitted again.

Now just need to figure out why the hell my rad fan stays constantly on when warmed up, even with engine turned off it still bloody runs If anyone could tell me what can be the cause?
(I'm changing thermostat and fan relay in morning too)
