Saxo life

Evening all, I currently own a 6k polo saloon and previous to this a 6n polo.

I am after something a little different with more power now and heard Saxo's are cheap to run and also give good power for such a small car.

    Insurance has dropped a little and can get insured on a VTR for under £100 a month. There are a few VTRs for sale near me;

1 - 78k miles, no tax, 12 months MOT although has no service history at al. Priced at £1200.

2 - 150k miles, 12 months MOT, few months tax and full service history. Last one done 1k ago with cambelt done. Priced at £900.

As stated, I'm from a "polo background" so have no idea about saxos so really just looking for advice. How long do saxo engines last? is 150k a lot for a car of that age (2001 plate) and likely to need work done soon?

Any information would be very grateful!

Sorry second car is at 158k not 150k.

Both will probably need work, although no service history can be scary. It'll need servicing and the cam belt doing plus tax which will be all in about £300 and I'd say £1200 to start with is expensive.

Second sounds better but it has a few miles on it.

There's a buyers guide on here if you do a search.

Thanks for your reply, I'd definitely had gone for the lower mileage one but the fact it has no service history put me off straight away.

I had a look at the buyers guide which was very helpful although didn't really answer some questions I have.

For example, 6ns were known to have weak gearboxes and supposedly gave up roughly around 60-80kish but the engines were decent. How strong are the saxo engines? Do many go strong after 150k or is that basically a no go.

    Cheers

Few people on here have high milers but I don't know about that high. I'd wait for better cars to come up. People on here do sell and you'll know the history.

Saxo engines are pretty bomb proof if they're serviced. There are many components that are going to fall to pieces before the engine. I'd be more cautious over the condition of the rear beam than the engine, you can buy a VTR lump for £50.

You could take the risk with the higher mileage one as its clearly been looked after with the full service history.

Another benefit is the fact that the timing belt has been changedy.

And if it did go pear shaped replacement engines are cheap enough, and not that costly to fit especially if you can do the work yourself.

If that ever happened, you could go down the vts route

My car has or did have 105k on it and the engine was goosed.i replaced with a 56k engine and serviced it along with belt kit and its running a treat....touch wood.

My Dad owns an electrical company and there's a garage that the vans go to then get invoiced over so if anything major was to ever happen I could take it there then pay my Dad back in weekly instalments etc so the fitting of new engines and such isn't worrying BUT I don't want to spend £900 on a car that needs work within a few weeks haha.

Many polos (1999 etc) has 150k+ on clubpolo when I were a member, do many people have similar miles on a saxo on here?

    Thanks everybody!

First has no service history = you'll have to spend extra on cambelt/water pump and fuck knows what. Wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

Second one has too many miles especially at that price., wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

They both seem pretty pricey you can pick vtr's for pennies now days I got my 2000 vts on 100k for £750 with 12 months mot with recent cambelt and clutch and that isn't out the ordinary

My furio had 144k on the clocks with full service history (I bought it on 129k)
Ran sweet as a nut. Never had any problems before or after I did the head gasket (didn't need doing but common on these engines)

I had a friend who had one on 60k and that were nothing but problems.

Inner wing had rotted under ecu tray (common place) passed every mot without advisories once I changed the axel. (Original to the car)

Avoid both, they are very expensive.
Can pick decent VTRs up for £600 easily.

they dont look like good deals to me first is way to expensive and 2nd had way too many miles imo.you should wait and summit should come along. i got my 1998 vtr with a few months tax, 80k miles and 12 months mot for £700,and that was from a dealer aswell, had it 6 months so far and hasnt broke down once.
