Temp gauge saying engine is hot but no hot air. and high idle speed for little while.

so the other day i was driving back from somewhere wich is about 30 miles from home and i was driving through a little vilage doing about 5MPH.. when i left the village i noticed my temp gauge was about 3/4 up so i kept an eye on it and when i was driving back on 40-60mph roads it was sitting about half way untill i hit roundabouts. then it would go back 3/4 up.. i had to do about a 80 round trip to a friends house when i got back and i wasent to sure if to go or not. so i went home and let the engine cool down for 30 mins. when i went out i opepned the radiator tank up and it was almost empty. so i filled it up and thought it would be okay.. i got in the car and temp gauge was at the bottem. so i drove for about 5 mins and the temp gauge was up about 1/2 way already. i got about 20 miles into the trip and i was on a A road doing about 60mph and the temp light came on so i pulled over in a Shell garage and noticed the water was empty again. so i filled it up and went on. about 10 miles later it came on again. so i called AA out and they said my radiator cap oring had gone. so he replaced it and said it should be okay. but he noticed in the water tank that there was oil in it. where i think there was a oil leak before i bought the car and they didnt clean it out. "i havent lost much oil in the past 3 months" so he said there might be a block in the radiator. or the thermostat could be screwed and the water is finding somewhere to come out. so i carried on with my trip and it was fine for about 15 miles when i got to my friends house. when i left about a hour later and about 5 miles before i got onto the A road i noticed the temp going back up. once i got onto the A road it was sat at half way untill i got to roundabouts or juntions it would go back to 3/4.. about 2 miles before i got home the temp light came back on. so i went home and left it overnight. i went to a ggarage the next day and they said it could be the radiator. i orederd one but the sent the wrong one i have a new thermostat aswell to replace. so i havent drove much since then.. but last night i went out to meet a friend " the car hadent been used all day" i got in the car and the temp gauge was at bottem. i drove for about 4 mins and the temp gauge was up half way. so i turned on the heater and i was only getting cold air. but after about 15 mins it then got hot even though the temp gauge said the engine was hot for a while. then when i was driving home i noticed my engine was idling at 2,000 RPM so i toke it home and went in my mates car.. about 30 mins later i came back and turned the engine on and it was fine back at about 1,100 RPM " It was 1 degress" so i am puzzeld on what the problem might be. any sugestions on what it could be?

Mine done the same and it was head gasket !

Is there any emulsification on the underside of the oil cap?also check the dipstick to see if there is any?

If your going to replace the radiator and thermostat get it done and bleed the system properly. If you've had an airlock the temp will do right up.

The temp sensor could also be faulty, but I doubt it

I've checked the oil and it's not milky so I don't think it's the head gasket.. But I have lost a bit of oil

Oil can get into the cooling system without making the oil really bad and milky. Certainly sounds like a head gasket failure to me

Great.. But I don't understand why I don't get heat out of the heater?

You either have an air lock or the matrix is bunged up mate.

It's either blocked with oil or air locked with gasses, possibly maybe combustion ones hence the crazy readings on the gauge.

When the head gasket went on my polo a few years back my symptoms were overheating and the blowers blowing cold air.

After inspection I had no coolant in the expansion tank and the emulsification was bad.

Sometimes you can get emulsification from doing lots of short journeys but when you add it to overheating and no coolant its obvious what the cause is.

In your case you're not getting any signs of milky bobby munk in your oil,but as has been said that's not always the case.

What is happening from the tailpipe? Is it very smoky, more than normal?its hard to tell when its cold but I'm sure you can tell?

It is more than likely that the overheating and cold air from the blower is being caused by the same problem. The heater matrix is usually the highest point in the cooling system and when air enters the system it makes its way to the highest point, and stays there causing you to get cold air and nothing else. You can bleed it but I guarantee within a short time it will be back again.

Could be a fucked thermostat, staying closed causing the engine to heat up quickly and not allowing the warm water to circulate up through where the heater matrix is.....but I'm not sure this would account for the loss in coolant, where does it go?im sure it needs to circulate to the expansion tank and feck off via the overflow but this is assuming the system is pressurised.

But if the water is disappearing via contamination with the oil then the last culprit is not the case.

There are many types of HG failure and many symptoms......

If there is oil in the coolant it points to the head gasket is weeping at the very best. It can only really get into the coolant passages that way unless you've got a cracked block, head or have a leak in the oil to water heat exchanger which a standard vtr won't have. Don't worry though on these engines a head gasket is a job that's easy enough or cheap ish for a garage to complete, or indeed another engine can be purchased for pennies and dropped in

i was going to say you head gasket but could be air locked i had problems with my old west coast with the heat turned out my head was gone with the wind replaced it new seals cause i had leaks then she ran a dream.
