Rear brakes dont work

  1. #1
My mum brought her Saxo up today so I could weld her exhaust but found numerous other issues with it.

Basically the rear brakes don't work (both sides). The rear pads had been fitted incorrectly resulting in NSR having uneven wear so changed the pads, cleaned up the discs, all with no improvement. I bled the both rears but also with no improvement.

So jacked up, handbrake on, they work fine. But with handbrake off and a friend pushing the brake pedal I can rotate both rear wheels with not much effort.

My first port of call tomorrow is to replace the brake fluid and full bleed but apart from that I am thinking it has to be the compensator valve? Has anyone have any similar problems and give me some advice to save me pissing about for nothing?

    Its a MK1 VTR.

How free is the valve? They don't usually jam in a way that stops all fluid getting to the rear however usually go hyper active and lock up when you even look at the pedal

I haven't checked it yet, it went dark so packed up. I know it failed its last mot about 10 months ago on a seized compensator valve so I freed it off and it passed.

Is fluid getting to the valve?

I take it is as I can bleed it from the rear calipers?

you may still get partial flow at the nipple with a seized valve, but not enough pressure to pass a brake test.

There's no way this would pass a brake test they literally don't work. haha. You can feel resistance by hand when the pedal is pressed but on the road they wouldn't be of any use, plus the brakes do feel like shite haha

Do you think it could be the compensator valve? and can this be fixed or will I need to replace it?

get a load of penetrating oil then grease on it, none of this Water Displacer stuff.

pop the pads out and check the sliders aren't seized, wind the pistons back and forth a little, make sure it all goes back together properly.

Done this today boss. Pistons all spot on, sliders filed down so now like new and moving freely with new pads. The rear brakes work perfect on the handbrake, just absolute poo via brake pedal.

Well I got under it this morning, whilst having my dad press on the brakes whilst I mess with the compensator, POP. brake line blew. Both had rusted at the rear by the fuel filter so hopefully that's the issue. Off to pick up a repair kit so will update later with how I get on.

Thanks for the replies and input to those who helped.

classic. Most people who have changed their rear axle may tell you how the end of the brake lines have deteriorated.

Mine did this, ended up needing new calipers. Bleeding and changing the brake pipes and comp valve made no difference

It went dark by the time I got all the bits so going to crack on tomorrow. Fingers crossed it will sort the problem. Will update tomorrow.

Replaced the lines, all bled up but just the same as previous. So only things can be now surely is dodgy compensator valve, master cylinder or as someone has mentioned dodgy calipers. Cant see it being calipers as handbrake works perfect but I may be wrong?
